Introduction to Running with GPS

by Jon Werner

People around the world are beginning to realize the importance of physical training and good health. Those who take the time to invest in their bodies live longer and are generally happier, but in the modern world, exercise and healthy diet are not simple things to accomplish. Busy schedules and food on the go prevent many people from giving themselves the physical attention they need. As a result, many new inventions have developed over the years to give humans the ability to keep their schedules, while fitting in some highly effective exercise training. From interval training, to abdominal workouts, to exercise videos, the world of fitness has adapted to accommodate the modern human lifestyle. Running has become an extremely popular sport, and is perceived by many to be the most effective way to burn fat and stay fit, however, a majority of runners do not spend the time or logic they need to make their running most efficient. GPS systems adapted for running are excellent tools for calculating and tracking your running, serving as a huge benefit to runners, joggers, and those in physical training for surgery or disease recovery. However, before you choose a GPS watch, phone, or other device, it is important to become knowledgeable about the ways it can be used to improve your physical training. There are several methods for utilizing a GPS system when running that will increase the amount of physical productivity in your workout. One method involves making a distance goal for every time you run. If your longer-term goal is to be able to run a marathon, you might begin running one mile per day for a set time period, such as a week, to get used to running every day. After this time has passed, an additional mile would be included in your workout and this continues gradually until you reach your distance goal. This strategy for achieving endurance requires distance features on whichever GPS device you have chosen. Positional capabilities (for tracking your location) are also helpful if you are doing long distances so that you don't find yourself lost, a long way from home.Speed based goals are another way that GPS watches and phones are useful. Rather than just tracking the distance, the runner focuses on the pace at which they are completing distances. The most common training for this goal is to maintain a certain speed each day continually increasing the distance, and later the speed. This kind of training is useful for many types of runners, from short distance to marathon, and is used from the professional level to the entry-level enthusiast. The GPS system used for this kind of training should have an accurate speed to timing feature and/or pacing feature. For professional runners it is also helpful for coaches to track the athlete's progress in real time. If you are considering a GPS running device such as a watch or cell phone, it is important to purchase from one of the best manufacturers. If you are looking for a watch you might consider Garmin or Magellan watches, and for a cell phone you should check out BiM Active. These brands carry quality equipment capable of delivering the kinds of tools you need to improve your running. Contacting a physical trainer is a great idea if you are seriously thinking about beginning a running program. They will be able to offer you more advice on ways to efficiently use your GPS device to increase your productivity and physical health.
