HTML 5 Are We There Yet?
As smartphones and tablets become the device of choice all over the world, the expectations from applications meant for these platforms continue to change. In the last 24 months we have increasingly begun seeing app projects that go far beyond trying to address a limited set of functional requirements. And the question that most often starts off a debate is whether the project requires Native development or do we go cross platform with HTML 5.
HTML 5 obviously takes the vote from a "cost of development per platform" angle, but comes with an in inherent set of limitations. There is undoubted merit in leveraging HTML 5 to deploy lighter, less complicated applications on multiple platforms. However, the moment complexity increases, lets say, with requirements for dynamic data parsing or integration with backend servers where structured or unstructured information needs to get exchanged, the gaps in the HTML side begin to show when compared to Native options.
At the same time, as smartphones and tablets start becoming (even more) omnipresent in our personal and professional lives, more complex applications are getting ported to these thin clients, with particular traction on the enterprise side. More companies want their workforce to be connected and enabled on the move, while removing entirely the distinction between what was earlier possible only from a server, desktop or laptop. Similarly more consumers want seamless access to their legacy portals, personal information, life's work, et al, irrespective of the device...
The balance between cross platform reach and relative economies in development versus a superior user experience and more robust integration with broader infrastructure is what we ideally need to find. Perhaps a better set of standards for HTML5 is required, but until then Native development seems to be the platform of choice for most endearing mobility solutions.
HTML5 can still be disruptive...and as technologists we are all bullish....but the disruption is likely some way off....
