All About the Chipmunks Chip 'n Dale

by Michel Maling

The world just love those two adorable chipmunks Chip 'n Dale. All they do is irritate all the other Disney characters, but we love them all the same.

In 1943 they made their first appearance in Private Pluto. Although they looked a bit different and weren't named, certain characteristics were recognizable on them as we know them today. They made their mark then and are now the world's most famous animated chipmunks.

Chip 'n Dale were created by the Walt Disney Company. Their names were suggested by Bill Henson who was the story artist in the studio at the time. Originally Chip 'n Dale both had black noses, but no one could tell them apart. So Dale was given a red nose and Chip a black one. Chip's voice was done by James MacDonald from 1943 to 1960 and then by Tress MacNeille from 1989 onwards. Dale's voice was done by Dressie Flynn from 1943 to 1960 and then by Corey Burton from 1989 onwards. Chip was made to be a logical schemer, and Dale was made to be more dimwitted and goofy. Chip's nose resembled a chocolate chip, and this helps us to know who he is. He also has smooth short fur on top of his head while Dale's fur is ruffled.

Their second cartoon was called Squatters Rights and they were also up against poor Pluto the Dog. Mickey Mouse was also in this cartoon, but he doesn't see the chipmunks.

They were given their own cartoon series in the 1950's, but only three were made. In 1951 they did Chicken In The Rough. In 1952 they made Two Chips And A Miss, and then in 1954 The Lone Chipmunks.

Chip 'n Dale only officially got their names in 1947 in a cartoon entitled Chip 'n Dale where they antagonize Donald Duck. From then on they continued appearing in cartoons usually annoying and terrorizing poor old Donald Duck.

The chipmunks fight for the first time in the cartoon Two Chips and a Miss. In this short cartoon they spend their time vying with each other for the attention of a certain Clarice who is a performer at the acorn club.

The Rescuers is their most recent Disney Movie. I am certain we have not seen the last of these two adorable chipmunks.
