But the main question that many players ask is what makes a poker player a great poker player? Many articles and books have dealt with this question, and as far as we know there isn't a clear formula for solving this question, but there are some qualities that helps to shape a better poker player.

What is more important for a poker player, skills or luck, is the chicken and egg dilemma of the game. Some people say that luck is all that matter while others are sure that better skills are the most important thing in poker. The truth, as always, is somewhere in the middle. Experienced poker players know exactly when to rely on their senses and luck and where to use their skills and experience. There is importance for both of those resources and the smart player knows how to combine it to an excellent playing strategy. It is a fact that even if novice players have small chances to win in a game or two in poker rooms, in the long run a layman has better chances to win more games and this is exactly because he's relying not only on the luck factor but also on his own skills and experience.

If you'll read biographies of great poker players like Johnny Moss, Amarillo Slim, Stu Ungar and others you'll see that they are very different in style and behavior. Some of them were cold, concentrated and calm while others were extravagant and eccentric. If people who are so different in their game style and attitude can be great poker players, it necessarily means that there aren't any qualities that good poker players must acquire?

The truth is that even if all of those players had a very unique attitude towards the game and towards life in general, there were some qualities that they all shared. And these qualities are what made them great. These qualities are the exact qualities that you have to work on if you want to be a great poker player.

All the poker in the poker hall of fame shared essential qualities that made them legendary. Each one of them had self respect. They all knew what they worth, they all knew that they are excellent players and they all trusted their skills and experience. Each one of the greatest poker players in the world had confidence in themselves and knew that their abilities are enough to win the WSOP or other important tournaments.

Each one of the greatest poker players in the world used his wisdom. They were all wide and planned their future moves ahead. It doesn't mean that they all read tons of poker books and had vast technical knowledge, but they all shared that wisdom of the predator. They all thought about the future and were able to guess what their opponents will do next.

The last thing that all of them had is creativity. All the world's best poker players have unlimited creativity and the ability to act in ways that their opponents will never guess they'll act in. In conclusion, being a great poker player isn't an easy task, but if you'll look at the legends of this game, you might learn some new things that could be helpful for those who really want to be great poker players.
