The Basic of Search Engine Optimisation.
4 tips to help you get higher search engine rankings.
Search engine rankings are an important factor to consider when you have a website that relies on a steady flow of traffic. If your web site is not featured in the first 20 results of a search engines results, then it is going to be hard to find and will probably not get much traffic. Not having a great deal of traffic isn’t always the end of the world, especially if all the traffic that does find your website is targeted and converts into sales. This however is rare, there are lots of things you can do to increase the conversion rate of your websites visitors i.e. turning a visitor into a paying customer, but a high conversion rate requires that you have a product that people need or really want and that your price is right. There are many on site factors which will come into the equation too e.g. ease of navigation, site speed, checkout and payment options etc...
Since most people using a search engine to find goods or services on the internet will click on the first few results, you need to make sure that your web site is appears within them. Although no legitimate search engine optimisation company can guarantee high search engine rankings for your site, often hiring a professional SEO company will prove to be a sound investment and could yield a great return on investment. If the keyword that you are hoping to get found for has less than a few thousand results then generally you should be able to get a good search engine ranking yourself. Following these tips will get you on the right road.
1. Content
Content is an important factor in high search engine rankings. Make sure that you have plenty of good quality, relevant content throughout your site with your target keywords included. It’s also worth doing a search for your competition, you can then see which keywords they are targeting and also see if they have missed any which you could take advantage of. The best way to see which keywords a website is trying to rank for is to open the site in your browser and right click on the page, then click view source. In the ‘meta’ section at the top of the code there should be several clues which should give you a hint as to which keywords are being focused on.
2. Web Site URL
Your web site’s URL can help you rank higher with the search engines if it contains your keywords. However, don’t think that naming your site after your keywords will always help your rankings – you need to do more than just that. But still, it is one of the factors in improving a search engine ranking. A Good example of how this could work is think of a local service such as a plumber in your area e.g. plumber in London. The URL for this business could be London-plumber.com which would then help the site get ranked for terms involving the words London and plumber.
3. Search Terms
The search terms that you want to get ranked for should appear in your website content. If they don’t then it is almost certain that you will not achieve a high search engine ranking for them. It is also important to note that search engines cannot read text in pictures or flash animations. You must include your keywords and phrases in the text section of your website.
4. Page Title
The title of your page is very important, and if you choose the title properly then it can make a big difference in search engine ranking and also getting people to click on your site once it is ranked. The more specific you make your title the more attractive it will be to a browser and the less potential competition there will be for the title phrase. Titles should be long enough to explain what is on a site, without being too long that no weight is given to your keywords. Ideally titles should be less than 80 characters in length.
If you can implement these tips into your site then you will have made a good start to getting your website well ranked for your search terms. However these tips alone will only give you the edge you need if your chosen niche is not overly competitive.
