Becoming Part of a Family

by Kelsey Monahan

Eighteen months ago, I was faced with a decision which would change my entire life. My parents made the decision to move from Colorado back to where we grew up in Minnesota. I had completed 4 years of college, started a new job and just barely began to concrete myself in Colorado. When my family moved to Colorado, I vowed to teach myself an education in business before I left. During Christmas, my parents packed their items and left my littlest brother and myself behind to fend for ourselves. I lasted about three months in my brother’s company because our aspirations in life were on different ends of the spectrum. Three days after we moved from our parent’s house in to a tiny three bedroom apartment, I was blessed with a live-in nanny position in the beautiful foothills of Boulder. At first, my “manny” position, as my three kids coined it, was exciting and certainly a different atmosphere from my usual career choices. I had paid my way through college as a construction apprentice and bartender at local bars and breweries. I studied at the local university in business and entrepreneurship, so I paid attention while working to see if running a restaurant was within my career skills. One of the many reasons I received the nanny position was my restaurant background. My skill set in the house was very comparable and the owner had aspirations of restaurant ownership, not to mention, my next door neighbor was a successful restaurant entrepreneur himself. I began to realize how much I could contribute as the days pasted. Before focusing my career into business ownership, I took multiple jobs to help increase my awareness of my surroundings. I always focused on places which could educate me in ways to balance my lifestyle. 24-Hour Fitness offered me an assistant manager position, which taught me not only to be accountable for myself, but the careers of others. As a perk, I picked up on a number of training techniques to keep myself healthy inside and out. I was offered a position with Pre Paid Legal Services to represent the Boulder area, teaching me about networking and growing a very large business. I have to mention PPL really gave me the confidence to think big in terms of success and personal achievement. All this time I was learning these great life-lessons, if you wish to refer to them in that way, I was sharing these with the three absorbing children I lived with. The improving results in their focus and growth from these lessons I was teaching them, changed my personal and career focus indefinitely.Naturally when you teach someone, they grow. What they grow into was my question. My curiosity kept my enthusiasm in becoming part of the family growing ever more. I began to focus my education to how could I grow my family into a sustainable one. Family sustainability to me is surviving in an environment focused on equal giving and receiving. I tallied my costs to my current lifestyle, (lodging in a five bedroom house in North Boulder, gourmet cooking every meal, complimentary transportation in a luxury automobile, gym membership at a high ranking fitness facility, a fully functional business office; complete with DSL internet, separate phone line, and fax capability, but most important, love and affection from the entire family) and worked backwards to determine what exactly it would take to sustain a similar lifestyle. I found home based business to be the most effective in two ways. As an income generator they provide low start-up costs, low overhead, and the ability to focus personal passions for success. Secondly home based business offer more time freedom than any other style of work. Considering the effectiveness of the home based business, how can we use it to our advantage and make a sustainable income to provide for our families? Using this guideline is how I arrived at present time. Can we as capable humans, provide and prosper by combining the tools on the internet and our own intellect? If we can, would we be willing to share those tools with others we care about and love? Would we teach them by taking the time away from our own jobs and currently endless careers of unimportance? Our world is in need of exploration, new ideas, and desperate changes. I believe if we combine the tools necessary and our intelligence to help educate society on how to successfully manage our own household, we will all prosper through the life blood of our own personal businesses. Lastly, I searched endless days for a business which is easy to start and didn’t require money to learn how to run it. After combining everything I had learned about home based businesses to find a failure in this system, I finally succeeded at my first failure of many to come.
