Caring for your lips!
Honey Almond Lip Calm
Your smile is not just the best introduction but also a lasting impression. Although the warmth of a smile comes from within your heart, your lips do play a vital role in ensuring that the smile is radiant and welcoming. Since your lips are the natural gateway to your smile, you need to keep them healthy by keeping them well moisturized and soft. Although your lips’ skin is very similar to the one over the rest of your body, comparatively the skin of our lips is much thinner. The lips of people with lighter skins contain less melanocytes (melanin producing cells), which gives them a red color since blood vessels show through. On the other hand, the lips of those with darker skin contain more melanin which is why their lips are darker. The lips have no protection of body oils or sweat since there are no sweat glands on them. Also, while it is constantly being wet by food, water or your tongue, it also dries up with every breath you take. This is the main reason why lips dry faster and become chapped. Add to it the harsh sun rays, the dry winds of winter or the other pollutants in your air which only speed up the drying of your lips and damage the skin.
It is therefore essential that we take extra care of our lips by using the right moisturizing product so that they do not dry out or crack easily. Lip balms are the products most of us rely on for keeping our lips soft and well moisturized. We do need to be on the lookout for harmful ingredients since they are ingested easily through the soft membranes of the lip or if you are in the habit of chewing your lips. Although lip balms have been around for quite some time, their formulation has evolved over the years. The initial lip balms or ‘Chap Sticks’ as they were called, used petroleum jelly as the main ingredient. Recent studies have proved that to be ineffective since the skin cannot absorb petroleum jelly, it is able to provide protection only for a short period of time.. In fact it makes the lips more chapped since it doesn’t allow the skin to breathe.
There are a variety of lip balms available today. The best lip balm is the one that suits you and how your lips react to them. While experimenting with different lip balms try to pick ones without harmful content. Once you discover the perfect lip balm, stick with it. Here’s a little help for choosing one. The balm should contain sunscreen since sun exposure can lead to severe chapping. If you intend to be out in the sun for longer periods of time, find a lip balm that protects your lips from the harmful sun rays. Ingredients like vitamin E, line oil, palm oil, almond oil and grapefruit oil have a lot of goodness that can do wonders for your dry lips. Lip balms which contain oils and waxes derived from plants like coconut cream or orange oil are excellent moisturizers as well. Other natural moisturizers like beeswax, sunflower oil, jojoba, hemp seed and avocado.
The ones containing shea butter are without a doubt the best you can get. It not only gets absorbed easily but also enhances the moisture retention properties of your lips. It also helps in restoring the elasticity of the skin cells. Using unrefined shea butter revitalizes the skin cells and heals them as well.
Avoid using lip balms with para-aminobenzoic acid. Although it is a sun block and is usually found in sunscreens, it can have unwanted effects when applied on lips. Other ingredients that you need to watch out for and avoid are: Parabens, used as preservatives can be carcinogenic Tocopheryl acetate may cause burning, itching and scaling Petroleum jelly Hydrogenated lecithin which is a penetration enhancer and might alter skin structure and allow other chemical to reach the bloodstream Alcohol which dries the skin further and might cause irritation. Artificial coloring, flavor and fragrance. These ingredients are usually toxic in nature and should be avoided at all cost.
