As wallpaper is making a comeback designers and artists are beginning to look for new ideas and designs to make a wallpaper mural. But we think that to have a unique wallpaper mural that will amaze your customers and friends you only have to look back at previous designs such as ‘art deco’. A wallpaper mural can cover any wall area no matter how large and an ‘art deco’ design can give that wow factor that they are looking for. So what is ‘art deco’ and what ‘art deco’ designs and images would make an ideal wallpaper mural ?

‘Art Deco’ began in the 1920’s in Paris and covers such areas as art, architecture, film and fashion and was quickly picked up by designers after it was introduced at a decorative arts show in Paris in 1925 and was epitomized the height of elegance and glamour.

Although as all trends it phased out over time (1940,s) it still lives on in architecture (eg The Empire Estate Building) and can be seen in most cities around the world (eg Miami). It is now though being gradually introduced in art and with the advancement in printing technology can be produced onto any wallpaper mural media.

Art Deco’ is characterized by its designs of stepped forms and sweeping curves and chevron patterns and used with many types of materials such as wood, chrome and steel.

So how would ‘art deco’ images make a good subject for a wallpaper mural ? One of the most popular themes for the modern wallpaper mural is a city scene or an image of an iconic building such as the Empire Estate Building or Chrysler Buildings in New York. Even landmarks can make a great wallpaper mural. The Hoover Dam is an unusual example of ‘art deco’ but it is as is the ship ‘The Queen Mary’ which is now used as a museum and hotel in Long Beach California. Both would make a dramatic image for a wallpaper mural.

For a more unusual example of ‘art deco’ people are having images of the London Underground stations as their wallpaper mural. Recently British Football Clubs are being used as a wallpaper mural and many of the clubs grounds that were built in the 20’s and 30’s are built in the ‘art deco’ style. One of these in Arsenal FC and although they have recently relocated to a new stadium traditionalist still liked the design and look of the old stadium High bury London, want it to adorn their walls at home and their offices as a wallpaper mural.

Designers and architects are realizing that they can incorporate ‘art deco’ shapes in their work. They can cover surfaces such as walls with a wallpaper mural of sweeping curves and repeat patterns of chevrons to create a theme for the room. Many firms now do not just want a picture of a lake or forest on their walls, they want a theme going through their offices. The advantage of using a wallpaper mural to display ‘art deco’ allows the designer the flexibility of creating any shape and image to mould around the shape of the building. On the wallpaper mural can be any photograph or ‘vectra’ image or the artists own design.
