The Story Of Steel Buildings

by Titus Bodo

Housing is one of the primary needs for human existence and for decades, man has experienced revolution in his mission to obtain quintessential housing and housing for him and his household. Quite a few improvements have already been made from the ancient common houses to the current contemporary dwellings. Contemporary developments in technologies have certainly played a major part within man’s groundbreaking change from the wood shelters utilized by our ancestors and forefathers to the current modern-day residential metal buildings.

Steel has in the end provided a much better alternative for shelter materials when compared with wood due to the strength, durability along with ease of being produced. However, metal has not been utilized for large scale construction for too long. Before the growth of modern technology, steel was implemented to create metal weapons such as metal swords because of the strength and ease of sharpness. Through time folks progressed from producing swords to fabricating beams for dwellings.

Steel buildings became increasingly common by the 1800's for portable housing that was especially useful for the working class, gold rush workers, pioneers, and other mobile workers in the era of the industrial revolution. The late 1800's and early 1900's saw the first real use of steel as the main structural component of buildings. This coincided with the beginning of the sky-scraper era b4 the war and was the first time steel was used in the construction of multi-story structures of such height. During the post-world war 2 era steel was increasingly used to create residential steel buildings for the millions of people left homeless by war. Steel was able to provide shelter to millions of people because steel buildings were simple to build and less costly and therefore more affordable than building with wood.

Currently steel buildings are pre-built in factories otherwise known as pre-engineering before they are taken to the construction sites where they are to be used. Actual measurements of the prefabricated steel building are taken via prior planning of the construction site; this method of pre-engineering and prefabrication of steel buildings in a building factory has caused steel buildings to be regarded as both efficient and economical. To date there is no building material that is comparable to steel materials. The durability of steel building construction and its strength gives it a complete advantage over other construction materials and methods especially now that steel manufacturing companies are customizing their products to the consumer. There is a huge difference between these modern metal buildings as opposed to traditional wooden buildings.

Talk of convenience in construction and steel stands out as the best. A short construction period, ductile strength and good seismic performance are just some of the advantages of steel building materials for modern building construction. As much as steel materials are of great benefit and eagerly sought for their ease of use for modern construction, they also have some shortcomings. Steel materials come at a very high cost as global demand for steel increases, making wooden materials, which may be a bit cheaper, seem attractive at first glance. This shortcoming is overridden by the fact that steel building factories are customizing their products to make construction with steel more economical and affordable than building with wood.
