Sh*t, An Agent Just Requested My Manuscript! Now What?

by Jeff Rivera

Have you submitted you query letter and finally heard back from an agent? Don't Panic! First, you should celebrate! Some people literally wait years for an agent to finally request to see their stuff, whether that be a manuscript or a book proposal.

The first thing to keep in mind is that this is only the beginning in what is likely to be a long but memorable journey to getting your book published and on the bookstore shelves. Your manuscript or book proposal better be good and it better be ready, because you often only get one shot to make the right impression with these agents. This is what you should've been doing while you were waiting for a reply from an agent because you definitely don't want to keep them waiting once they finally do request to read your material. If they're left waiting, you can bet that there is a good chance they'll write you off and completely forget about you in the meantime.

If you need it, though, there's help out there. In fact, there are even former editors from majoring publishing houses and former agents that are willing to help you whip that manuscript in shape. Check this out: http://www.GumboWriters.com

Once you're certain it's perfect, you're ready for the next step, which is to note exactly what it is that they are asking for. Often times, they'll tell you to send the first 10 pages or the first 50 pages. Do exactly as they say. Nothing less and nothing more. I can't stress enough how important this is. You want to show them right away that you are compliant and can follow directions. Trust me, you'll go a lot further if you do as they say.

Remember that it doesn't necessarily mean that they liked your concept or query letter any more or less just because they requested to see 10 pages rather than 50, or a partial manuscript as opposed to the full manuscript. Every agent has their own preferences and personal reasons, and most of the time it's simply out of the best interest of time management.

You have to also make sure that it is properly formatted. If you visit their website, or search Google, you'll be able to make sure your manuscript is presented in a way that they expect.
