Grand Canyon Helicopters - A Terrific Way to Commemorate Veteran's Day
Veteran's Day is coming up and that means three-day weekend, perfect for those considering a flight by helicopter over the Grand Canyon.
Grand Canyon helicopters follow the same schedule on holidays as they do every other day of the year. In most cases, that's means hourly at both the West Rim and the South Rim.
Which rim should you go to? Maybe this will help.
If you want to take a helicopter tour out of Las Vegas, NV, you will head to the West Rim since it is closest to the city. If you plan to leave from a city in Arizona such as Sedona, Phoenix, or Scottsdale, you will head to the South Rim since that is closer.
Let's look at the options in tours at both rims.
If you depart from Las Vegas, you can choose from an air-only tour or one that lands at the canyon. Both kinds go over Lake Mead and Hoover Dam en route to the West Rim. The air-only tours circle the West Rim and return to Vegas, while the landing tours drop you off on top of the rim or on the canyon floor.
Things to do on landing tours.
The bottom flight comes with a picnic and gives you 30 minutes ground time alongside the Colorado River. There's a deluxe version of this trip that includes a boat ride and passes to the Skywalk. You can also tour the Skywalk when you choose a chopper that lands on top of the rim.
The unique thing about Vegas landing tours is that they are the only ones that let you go below the rim and land.
So if you choose a helicopter tour of the South Rim, it has to be air-only. The National Parks Service won't let helicopters fly below the rim there. But don't worry, the air tours are a lot of fun.
The South Rim air tours come in two versions: a 50-minute tour and a 30-minute tour. The short one takes you to the North Rim and back, and so does the long one, but the longer one also goes to the eastern edge of the Park. The longer tour is better obviously, because you get to see a lot more of the Park, in fact, you'll fly over nearly 3/4 of it!
Keep in mind, holidays are busy at the canyon, and Veteran's Day is no different. So, you should book your seats at least one week before you plan to go. However, since the peak travel season has passed, if you miss the one-week deadline, go ahead and try for tickets, you might get lucky.
If you want a good deal on your tour price, buy it online. The best deals are found during the summer months, but you can still get fantastic discounts during the winter. You can probably save about 25 percent. That's nothing to sneeze at when you factor in the savings on a group of two or more people.
Conclusion
Veteran's Day is on a Monday and it is one of the last holiday weekends of the year. It is a perfect time to go to Vegas or Arizona. A Grand Canyon tour is a great side trip to consider. And if you want to do it proper, then it's a helicopter ride all the way.
