Why do you need a locksmith?
I used to wonder how locksmiths stayed gainfully employed!
I just used to assume that the only time you would ever need a locksmith is if you were the unfortunate victim of a break in. If forced entry damage was severe enough that you couldn't fix it on your own then I thought that was the only time I would ever need a pro with this area of expertise.
Most of us are capable of heading over to our local big box store, you know the ones with the big orange or blue signs, and picking up a lock-set and installing it ourselves. So I used to wonder how these pro locksmith companies survived.
Then it happened.
I was all set to go out with my daughter and I turned the bottom door knob below the deadbolt and all I heard was a click. It didn't open. Turned it the opposite direction and it was as smooth as silk, the only problem was it wasn't opening the door!
I didn't panic, after all it was no big deal. I was going to remove the door knob and take out the faulty piece and head over to the place with the orange sign and get a new one, install it myself and my problem would be solved, or so I thought.
There was only one problem, to remove the faulty part I had to open the door to get it out. That proved impossible! To make matters worse, I called the local orange sign store and spoke to an "associate" on the phone, they didn't carry the part, I would have to replace the whole set.
Reluctantly I fired up my search engine started looking for someone to help me. Low an behold I got all kinds of results. I didn't know one of these companies from the other, so I called a couple of friends one of whom recommended a company that I recognized from the search!
They were there in short order, and had the door open in seconds. It was like magic! Get this, the part I needed was on the truck that the service person arrived in, I guess in their line of work this part is commonly faulty. Within twenty minutes of the service mans arrival my part was installed and my door was functioning again!
I now understand exactly why these guys are around!
I had some reservations about hiring one of these companies, the locksmith industry, has a bit of a rouge industry reputation. There is not a locksmith apprentice ship or a license necessary; there is no official association that I know of that governs this trade or skill.
I will tell you one thing though, these guys know their stuff, and they are not just one trick ponies either.
While making conversation and small talk the service person informed me that their company installs all kinds of security related equipment, not just locks.
An exceptional locksmith company will provide CCTV surveillance systems, in addition to high tech locking systems such as card lock or retina rectification systems.
These guys are also experts in auto lock out, so if your auto lock system malfunctions, you should consider your local locksmith before heading over to the local car dealer, I guarantee that you will save a lot of money on labor charges! They will come to you too, you cant beat that.
