Luxury Watches, The Finer Things
It took me a long time to appreciate the finer things in life. I could smoke a nice cigar without feeling sick until I was 30. I could appreciate a well aged scotch until I was about 32. My clothing was pretty much t-shirts til this year. But I always understood the allure of a beautiful watch. I would dress like a slob sometimes but not without my Philip Stein watch on. It was strange Philip Stein watches were a strange thing for a young man to be "in to." As were Gucci watches, or Raymond Weil Watches, I had a taste for them all. Luxury watches always seemed "fancy" but never so fancy that I'd be bothered about it. It's something about the precision and craft in a watch. It is a brilliant little mechanical unit. It's so intricate and strangely simple. Basically I am smitten with luxury watches.
My grandfather was a rough guy. But he appreciated finer things. He would stock up on fancy fragrent pipe tobaccos and good bottles of wine, but he also spent his days working at a sewage treatment facility. It takes time I think to realize that just because you are one way doesn't mean you are completely cut off from all other options. He had great suits and with every suit he had fine watches to match. Sometimes they were pocket watches, sometimes a more traditional wrist watch. Honestly he looked great. He cut a heroic figure as he dashed into the house for dinner. He carried himself like a man about town and he was! Everyone knew him and I think no small part of that was his flair for style.
When my grandfather and I would spend the day together every now and again I would hold his watches. He would set me up in the front seat of the car(before people realized sitting small kids in the front was probably a bad idea) and he'd give me a watch to occupy me. I always remember feeling like I had to treat them delicately, they seemed so special to him, I felt they should be special to me too. From then on I was hooked. I'd skip through catalogs for the watch section. I'd run over to the watch counter in Macy's like they were selling He-Man figures. It was a strange passion but one I think I have wholly grown into. Now I know how fine things compliment other fine things and now I can afford my own Gucci Watches.
