Growing Family Enjoys Shrinking Bills At Redrow New Homes Scheme In Downton

by Keith Osborne

With their two boys growing up fast, Tracy and Steve Boswell were running out of space at their old home in Aldershot. After an extensive search for a bigger home, the couple and their two sons, Jack and Harry, were able to find a property that met all their requirements at The Glades in Downton, Redrow's development of new homes in Wiltshire.

There aren't many homes remaining for sale at this rural development of high-specification properties, but buyers do have a choice of designs for the four- and five-bedroom homes still on the market, priced from £395,995 to £445,995. The space and internal features were certainly appealing to the Boswells, who plumped for a five-bedroom house that gave them all the bedroom and reception room space they craved.

"We looked at a number of new-build developments but Redrow just seemed to be a step above everything else we saw in terms of specification," says Steve. "The customer service offered was outstanding from the first day we spoke to the sales consultant, right through to the aftercare we have received from everyone on site."

He adds: "Our new home suits our lifestyle. There's so much space and we love the layout, which includes a large open-plan kitchen, dining and family room. The kids have a whole floor to themselves as the top floor has two double bedrooms and a bathroom, which will be great when they are teenagers."

Among the many advantages of buying a new-build home is the benefit of lower running costs due to new standards in energy-efficient appliances and building technique. The Glades has used a number of eco-friendly features, such as low-energy light fittings, water butts and solar panels, which have had a dramatic effect on the family's household bills.

"We haven't paid for our hot water since we moved in as the solar panels have covered that," says Steve, "and we've seen a marked reduction in how much gas and electricity we've used. Despite the cold winter months, the house was very warm and well insulated."

Though the pretty village setting is one of the elements that really sold The Glades to the Boswells, they are far from isolated. The village is only six miles from the centre of Salisbury and the development has excellent transport links to towns such as Bournemouth, Poole, Southampton and Swindon. Even London is only an hour and a half by rail from Salisbury station. The South Coast and New Forest are both easily accessible, which provides some wonderful opportunities to go out with the kids.
