Pro Athlete Training For The Average Person

by Jack Terry

People all have the same reasons why they want to start working out, or working out more often: they want to look better, lose weight, tone muscle and feel better about themselves. The percentage of people who go to a gym or a fitness center because they have dreams of pursuing an athletic career of some sort is very small in comparison to the number of "average" people, but they may actually hold the key to obtaining the best all-around results.

A pro athlete is not working out, taking classes or hiring a trainer for any of the reasons stated above. They are doing it because they need to lead a healthy lifestyle. How successful they are in their career and how long they are able to keep doing it depends directly on their overall physical health. They cannot keep their workout separate from the rest of their lives, go to the gym for an hour a day three or four days a week, and expect to be successful. Yet that is exactly what most "average" people do. They look at their time at the gym as if it is just another chore on the "to do" list, scrunched between "go to the bank" and "pick up the dry cleaning."

An athlete, whether they are already a professional or just hoping to be one, enlists the help of a trainer because they know that he or she will focus on their areas of greatest need and work with them to enhance their overall conditioning. A linebacker may have the physical strength but be lacking the speed and agility to get to the quarterback. A golfer may have a textbook but need increased core strength for longer drives and better stamina to be consistent all round. By seeing the area of opportunity, the trainer can create a workout program and a healthy lifestyle to achieve the best results.

The same can be done for the "average" person, because even though the reasons may be the same, everyone's needs are different. One person may need to build up cardio endurance, another may have extra weight they need to lose and someone else might need to tone up some underused muscle groups. The same focus that a trainer can give to an athlete they can give to these people as well.

There is no secret to success when it comes to engaging in a healthy lifestyle. The more focus you have and the more accountable you are, the longer lasting your results will be. By working with a personal trainer who knows the importance of that healthy lifestyle, and the ways it can be lived every day and not just for a few hours a week in the gym, even an "average' person can feel like an all-star.
