Numerous Methods By Which Home Automation Systems Can Better Your Lifestyle and Home's Value

by Glenn Bell

What exactly is a home automation system? What precisely will this sub-system do for you in your home? The response is that you will have multiple layers of technical control of your security system, architectural lighting, air-condtioning and heating, access control, intercom, front door video and even remote video. The sub-system is designed for simplicity for family members. Most of the automated control transpires just by the unembellished act of arming or disarming your burglar system. Other triggers for automated control are the result of access control and timed events which are the result of programming.

Comparably important in the understanding of home automation is to have a look at the numerous ways family members intermingle and control their system.

Color Touch Screens

In-wall mounted color touch screens are preferred and tried-and-true as a strategy of entering instructions to the system. A touch screen is worth its tonnage in silver because a home owner can control: burglar systems, lighting scenes, HVAC, multi source, multi-zone whole-house stereo, access control, video entry, and surveillance video.

Keychain Key Fobs

Wireless keychain key fobs are popular because most have four programmable buttons to do everything from arming or disarming the security system to turning on an arrival lighting scene.

Key Tags

Why use keys to unlock your front door when all you have to do is wiggle a teeny-weeny key tag in front of an good looking access control reader. It's effortless to program the reader to see each family member's key tag then run preprogrammed arrival scenes. When the burglar alarm system recognizes a particular key tag, a program is executed which could entail lighting, security, music, and room temperature in a selected zone of the home.

Any Phone, Computer, or Mobile Phone

In addition, access and control of the burglar alarm system from any phone or desktop computer, in the home or anywhere in the world for that matter. And these days observing callers at your front door on your IPhone® and then unlocking the door to let them enter your home is commonplace.

It would be impossibleto discuss all the programming possibilities here in this article, however I am going to give a couple of examples of programmed scenes which are common to automated homes.

The I'm Departing" Program

The last person out of the home in the morning can initiate this program by touching the away button on the wall-mounted controller, the touch screen controller, or any telephone. You have now armed the security system. Once activated the garage door will open allowing you several minutes to leave and then it will close as you drive away. The hot water heater is turned off and the heating/cooling temperature is adjusted by several degrees to save energy. The computer will then go through the house turning off all lights, appliances, hair-rollers, etc., that family members may have left on. If there is some occurrence that you would like to occur hours later, it can effortlessly be programmed. An example might be that you want the jaccuzzi to turn on and heat up prior to your arrival at a specific time each day.

The "Good Night" Program

By activating the night button on the wall-mounted controller, the touch screen controller, or any telephone, the Good Night Mode creates a lighted path from the living areas through the hallway and to the bedrooms and bathrooms to allow the family the appropriate lighting to get ready for bed. All other unused lighting and appliances are turned off and the security alarm system is activated for the evening hours. Receptacles used to power toasters, coffeepots, garage door opener and other devices are also turned off for security and fire safety purposes. The heating/cooling temperature is adjusted for the evening. In addition, the draperies are closed to a predetermined position, which in this case, are fully closed. Now your master bedroom overhead light turns off. Good Night!

Understandably the information I have provided is not the end of the banter on home automation and associated systems. However, by providing just some of the control options and programmed automation scenes hopefully you will have a better mind-set and how much such a system could mean to your lifestyle and increased value in your home.
