Today's article is focused on a timeworn concern when starting out in the internet marketing affiliate business. Countless affiliate site choices, and equally numerous affiliate platforms to choose from. Where do you start and what about all of those unanswered questions all requiring an answer before committing?

Here are a few of the common queries raised, just to give you some idea. This is not meant to be an exclusive or exhaustive list but rather a sample to give you an idea of what is involved.

Who is the best platform provider, do I use, Clickbank, JVZoo etc.? Are there any setup costs if and when I open an account? Exactly who pays my commissions? Are payments made weekly, monthly or how often? How do I know what is a good commission payment? Should I buy the product? What's the difference between a one tier or two tier program? Is there any way I can track my sales and commissions? I don't understand all the affiliate terminology!

You're probably thinking about now that all of this doesn't really help you. All we seem to have done is bombard you with additional concerns. But what this has actually highlighted for you is that affiliate marketing is not a simplistic business and does require quite a bit of homework before you become involved.

At this stage, if I could offer one sound bit of advice, it would be to get yourself some quality affiliate ebook primers. These are easily obtainable online and at very low cost, you really don't need any expensive course package at this stage. Actually if you have specific individual questions then just Google it and you will find dozens, if not hundreds of web pages all eager to help.

Who is the best platform provider, Clickbank, JVZoo etc.?

When you are starting out as an affiliate marketer you really should consider the big players such as Clickbank and JVZoo. This is because they are well established, with reputations second to none and are able to provide a complete service. It has been known for small affiliate providers to hold back commission payments and even to not make payments owed.

Are there any setup costs?

You may come across some affiliate vendors that require you to "join" their inner circle for a sign on fee before you can promote their products. However, you don't really need any of that. The more popular affiliate program providers are all free to join and unless you have a targeted niche that requires payment then don't part with your hard-earned dollars, pounds or euros.

Exactly who pays my commissions?

The answer to this can vary from vendor to vendor. What we would advise here is that you sign up and stay with one of the main platforms such as Clickbank or JVZoo until you learn the ropes and feel confident enough to branch out with smaller vendors.

The big players cover all payment issues and they really take away all those concerns, this includes customer service issues such as refunds etc.

As a side note to this question, if you do choose a non-established vendor then do check all of the terms and conditions before your commit your efforts promoting their product. If there are no terms and conditions then DO NOT under any circumstances consider that vendor.

Are payments made weekly? How do I know what is a good commission payment?

These two queries are usually covered in the program provider's terms and conditions. With regard to knowing what is a good commission payment, this is a decision that you will need to make as a business owner. Try not to base your business decisions on monetary payments alone, try to think long term and give serious thought to a residual income.

Should I buy the product?

This can be a tricky one since it will all depend upon what it is that you are actually trying to promote (sell.) If the products you are selling are low priced then it makes sense to buy one just to check it out and give it the once over.

However, if the products are large physical items or intangible products like say insurance, then it is not really practical to purchase. However, if you are really serious about selling affiliate products then it would be in your best interest to familiarize yourself with the product or service as in-depth as possible, which would mean having first-hand knowledge.

Many vendors of low priced products, as well as digital download products, will happily provide you with a free copy or free sample of their product. With respect to digital products, vendors will often provide the first couple of chapters of say a pdf ebook so that you can see exactly what is on offer.

Please don't expect vendors to provide freebie items or samples, you may need to build a rapport with the vendor before they part with their products. They are constantly being bombarded by freeloaders looking for handouts. This means you won't be getting that 56 inch LED television set as a freebie, but you never know.

What's the difference between a one tier or two tier program? Is there any way I can track my sales and commissions? I don't understand all the affiliate terminology!

Where can I see my hits per ratio? Does the vendor pay for hits and impressions? Where do I access support?

can all be answered by going online and doing your due diligence either on the vendor's website platform or by using the good old Google search.

Don't be put off by all of these questions as this can prevent you from ever starting your affiliate business. Just go gently at first and it won't be long before you are up and running as an affiliate marketing expert. Who knows you may become the next online guru.

Do contact the affiliate program provider's customer support or help desk, if in any doubt, and ask relevant questions. All of the better providers have 24/7 support and they are usually very happy to help you since it is you, the affiliates, who are the income providers for their business. your business is good for their business.
