What do you do in your Garage?

Classic Conversion Ideas

by Sam Qam

As car body and paint work gets more reliable and more resistant to the elements, and car security becomes further and further advanced. It is becoming less and less necessary or people to keep their vehicles in the garage. The inconvenience of having to get out of your car, open the garage and drive it in to a usually quite cramped space and struggle out the narrow gap between the door and the wall can be enough to put many off, as well the fact a nice big storage space can be terribly useful.

However, when the clutter gets too high, your convenient storage area can turn into something resembling a junk shop. Heirlooms get lost, cats get trapped and Christmas presents get forgotten. For those that don't have a junk pile and don't have a car, what do they do with their empty garage?

Snooker/Pool

The shape and size of a garage is the perfect size for a snooker or pool table, plus it is the most convenient place to get a bulky table into as well. Hours can be spent chalking your cue in peace and quiet.

Cinema Room

With a quick bit of insulating, decoration and the addition of a television and some chairs, your garage could be a cosy home cinema perfect for you, your family and for your friends. All you need now is some taste in movies and off you go.

Kids Play Room

With garages which are attached to your house, garage conversions can create the ideal place to set up as a kids play area. With breakables safely in the house, corners rounded, secured doors and plenty of toys the size and shape of a garage makes for a good place where you or your friends kids can play alone or together. You could even have a kid's birthday party in it too. By installing some UPVC windows you can bring some light into the room as well as retaining the rooms heat.

Gym

If you love to keep fit, but hate bad weather or suffer from debilitating hay fever, a home gym could be the best use for your garage conversion. Maybe you like yoga, in which case some mats and some soothing music could get you set up, and with the some French windows the room would be nice and bright. Or if you like to 'feel the burn' there would be plenty of room for a full set of weights. Be sure to reinforce the floor first though.
