NYT on the challenges of diet and fitness while traveling

We are in fitness business and wants to provide information about fitness.

This NYT article discusses the challenges in maintaining an exercise program and eating well while on the road. I know that it takes effort for me personally to maintain diet discipline and an exercise regime when I travel. From my perspective, it is all about forward planning and strategy. If you walk into a client dinner or cocktail reception without a plan to combat the various temptations, sometimes made worse by work related stress, you are doomed to failure. The same things go with exercise. One must book hotels with good fitness facilities, pack some basic functional fitness equipment to utilize in the room, and/or get outdoors and walk/run. The commitment and planning associated with keeping your exercise program on track on the road is as important as the facilities. Review your business schedules carefully and try and slot in exercise first thing in the morning, or before that dinner meeting.

The NYT article covers the various web based assistance and corporate wellness programs and weighs in with some other good advice. The article cites one executive who substituted fish for steak for his dinner entrée, added 30 minutes of exercise and more vegetables and lost ten pounds. That’s solid common sense advice that will work for many business travelers.

Another truism from the article: “people tend to have deeply ingrained habits and to resist changes — particularly ones relating to exercise and diet.” We can all laminate that one—the reality is that is really difficult to change habits and lose weight and gain fitness. The long term change in lifestyle is really the only approach that works in fitness and diet, whether focusing on the special challenges of traveling or simply those that face us when we are at home.
