Locked Out? Bummer.

by Kayla Tyler

Have you ever been locked out of your own house in the middle of the night? For some reason, whenever I’m locked out of my own house, I remember this dialogue from ‘The Beach’. It was between Richard, the protagonist, talking to his stoner neighbors in their Thailand resort. Richard had lost his keys to his bungalow:

“Locked out, huh?” said one of the stoners.

“Yeah.”

“Lost your keys? Bummer.” He continued.

“Yeah. Bummer.” Richard said sarcastically.

Whenever I get locked out this dialogue always comes into my head. I guess it illustrates perfectly how getting locked out feels like and to add to that, it also illustrates how other people doesn’t give a crap about your predicament.

So there I was. I was locked out again. It was three in the morning and I was looking for a locksmith in Phoenix Arizona. My friends and I were out for a night on the town and during the revelry, I somehow lost my set of keys. To make things worse, my spare key was inside the damn house. I think I spent the better part of an hour just fishing for it in my pockets. After it became clear that it wasn’t going to surface no matter how long I fished for it, I gave up.

“Where do you think I could find at this hour a locksmith in Phoenix?” I asked sleepily.

“Good luck with that. It’s late I want to go home.” Said my ‘good’ friend.

“There has to be a 24 hour locksmith in Phoenix! Don’t you have a phonebook or yellow pages with you somewhere?” I was getting desperate.

With a resigned look on his face, he rummaged through his stuff in the car. By some fortuitous turn of events, he did have the yellow pages with him.

“OK. Here we go. Hmm, locksmiths Phoenix AZ. There it is.” He pointed.

“Where?” I wrestled the book from his hands.

“Over there. It says: locksmith Phoenix Arizona. Give them a call. I’m going home. I’m buggered.”

“Come on man! You’re not going to leave me here are you?” I was getting irritated.

“A friend in need is a friend indeed.” His smiled slightly and continued mocking me.

Fortunately, the locksmith was open! They came around my house after a maybe an hour and my friend left for his house to go to sleep. What a friend right? Useless. Anyway that is exactly what I mean when you get locked out of your house. No one really cares do they? So the next time, don’t lose your keys. A maxim I still live by to this day.
