What exactly is heartburn? Like the name suggests, it is a burning sensation that is felt in the area around the heart. So many people are afflicted by it that heartburn relief seems to be much sought after. The thing is that heartburn has really nothing to do with the heart. So what is it all about anyway?

This condition happens when the acids that are used to digest our food get into the food pipe or esophagus and rise up. This becomes inflamed and there is a burning that is experienced. This discomfort is what prompts people to look out for anything that could provide heartburn relief. So heartburn is more to do with the digestive process than the heart so heartburn relief should look at how to tackle this from a digestion point of view.

There are a few measures you can take to avoid heartburn. The first thing to do is to watch your weight. Exercise regularly and follow a good diet plan that is nutritious as well as low in calories. Eat more vegetables, fruits and fiber. Watching your waistline can prevent acid reflux and you won’t need to look for heartburn relief tips anymore! Keep an eye on what you eat as well and see if any foods don’t agree with you. Sometimes alcohol and rich food could trigger an attack.

If you are a smoker, the only way to get heartburn relief is to stop – immediately if you can. Smoking after a meal might make you feel good initially but brings on the burning later. Don’t go straight to bed after a meal either. A lot of people do this and wake up with discomfort. At that time of the night, any heartburn relief remedies you try will be a bit late as you’ve lost sleep already. Some tips? Try sleeping on your left side and try raising the bed by about 6” at the head by placing bricks or blocks below it.

A lot depends on your clothes and posture too. Wear clothing that’s comfortable. When you’re uncomfortable, try loosening your belt around the waist and see how much heartburn relief you get! Don’t wear items of clothing that exert pressure on the waist. As far as your posture is concerned, keep your back straight and don’t slouch. Even while eating, sit up straight, don’t be a couch potato and that’s great heartburn relief advice for you!

During pregnancy, women tend to suffer from it. You can get heartburn relief by not putting on too much weight – follow your doctor’s diet plan – and by eating small meals often. For the others for whom the problem is chronic, there is heartburn relief medication available in liquid or tablet form. These however are habit-forming so talk to your doctor about what to take and how often to take it.
