Ways To Quit Smoking

Quit Smoking Before You Die

by Rick Beneteau

Smoking will affect your health in some of the worst ways imaginable, yet this is something that people do day in day out, and show few signs of trying to quit. Smoking kills more people each year and costs taxpayers huge amounts in insurance and healthcare costs due to all the people put in hospital by cigarettes. Even more frightening is the huge number of children who smoke, and there are more of them every day, 4400 more to be exact.

The immediate negative effects of smoking are easy to see in the form of bad breath, stained teeth and fingers, an empty wallet and far less breath. These things will affect your social life and sports life in every way possible as they drain your wallet of money we could all be using for far better purposes.

The more long term effects of smoking are very serious and often cost people their lives. Lung cancer and heart disease are the two most commonly known long term effects of smoking. Less well known but just as serious are other long term effects such as gangrene, blindness, diabetes and a whole host of other very life threatening conditions. Recent studies have shown that non smokers live an average of ten years longer than smokers, a whole decade more life to live.

Cigarettes have lots of other non life threatening effects. Smoking causes premature impotence in males and can cause patchy baldness. It will prematurely damage and age skin to a degree that only sunburn could hope to match, and this news that no one should be unaware of. To smoke is to not only throw away your money and your health, but also your good looks and maybe some day your life.

However some diseases are made much less common by smoking which is very odd to say the least. It appears that age related diseases such as Parkinsons or Alzheimers are made about half as common if the person smokes. Yet this could be simply because those who smoke die too early to show these conditions.

Smoking is also a gateway drug, one that means you have a higher chance of using other drugs later on in life. Drugs such as heroin or cocaine, the use of these drugs is all far more common in smokers than non smokers.

It is good news however that with the current knowledge of the bad outcome of smoking being known to more of the public now, quitting has become a more urgent desire. Huge amounts of people per year attempt to quit smoking and hopefully gain the health benefits that would accompany that. Also the trend in many western nations is to ban smoking in many public areas such as restaurants and bars. This has had the effect of doubling the amount of people each year trying to quit smoking, as has the very graphic ads being played on TV and radio.
