What Do You Need To Do To Work Abroad

I want to work with Eskimos…

by Sam Qam

100 years ago it would have been almost completely unheard of for anyone to think about going abroad to work. In fact, just 30 years ago it wasn't very common at all, and especially not to a country that spoke a different language to your own.

These days though, thanks to things like the internet it has become increasingly possible for people to search, find and move to a job in another country. But it still isn't that easy though. Here are some things you will need to think about if you want to do it.

Language Skills

Unless you want to work in a country where you speak the language already, you will have to do your best to learn the language. This is indeed not easy but you should at least learn some basic stuff. If you are going to be working with people you will need to be able to say 'hello' and to exchange basic pleasantries. Once you are there you will probably start picking up the language naturally but its best to go in as prepared as possible.

VISA/Work Permit

It is crucial that you sort out your VISA and/or work permit that will allow you to legally work in the country before you make the move. Some jobs won't even accept you unless you can prove that you have the appropriate paperwork. They don't want to waste their time after all. Call your country's border agency and ask them exactly what you need and how to get it.

Commitment

Above all, you need to be able to show your potential new employer that you are committed and are not likely to get home sick and end up leaving after the invest money training you. You can do this by explaining your motivations for emigrating and how you are going to deal with the culture shock etc. Saying this will help your application significantly.

Translations

Some jobs or university courses require you to provide officially and legally translated versions of your certificates and other important documents. This allows them to properly assess your qualifications and to see that you really are the right person for the job. There are lots of places in most countries that will offer certificate translation services for your documents but it is important that you make sure you only use one that is done by a qualified certificate translator officially approved/recognised by the country you want to work in. Otherwise your employer may not accept the translation.
