Engineering Career - Great Reasons To Commence An Engineering Career

by Wade Frazier

Being spontaneous can be fun, but when it comes to choosing your degree and your future profession, you should certainly spend some time thinking about your choices. There's a lot at stake, obviously, and the decision will have long lasting implications. If you have been considering engineering, you may not yet be sold on the prospects. However, once you see the top reasons for choosing engineering, you'll see that it may just be the perfect choice and opportunity for you.

Engineering offers a huge array of opportunities for interested individuals, and in fact, that's one of the leading reasons to choose the field. Engineers have dozens of different directions they could go in, in terms of the focus they want to have for their studies and the career that follows. The difference between these positions is huge too, as far apart as petroleum engineering to biomedical engineering or from aerospace engineering to civil engineering, and as mentioned, there are dozens of specialties to look at.

This is fantastic, because you don't have to do anything you don't want to. You can naturally choose which area is the best fit based on your predispositions, interests, skills, and simply what you want to do or which subfield has the best opportunities. Many people pigeonhole engineers as somebody repairing a city's infrastructure like roads and bridges, but there's far more choices than that.

Another great selling point for engineering degrees is that you don't have to choose from all of these specialties right away. You may want to be a chemical engineer, but after starting some of the scientific coursework down that path, find out that it's not a great fit. So then you can easily shift focus to become a computer or electrical engineer, for instance. You can also double up specialties and majors and end up as a biomedical and environmental engineer, just as an example.

Of course, one of the best reasons to consider engineering is that the field is expected to grow at a faster pace than many others over the next decade, according to the BLS. There are tons of job opportunities, from the government to the private sector, from multinational corporations to small startups, and more, and all of them offer unique, exciting and cutting-edge careers.

Of course, when evaluating any potential profession, you always have to consider the salaries and earnings. Engineers are some of the highest paid professionals across any industry or career. The potential is high, and the Engineer starting salaries are great too, which means you can start earning a fantastic paycheck right away.

For example, a computer hardware engineer has a median salary of over $95,000, while a petroleum engineer has an astonishing median salary of $108,000 annually! Even a more modest field in comparison, like mining engineering, will bring you a $75,000 median salary, and that's at the low end of the entire scope of engineering.

Hopefully by now you have seen many different reasons why you should consider becoming an engineer. There are dozens of areas to focus on and choose between, the financial rewards are great, the job opportunities are plentiful and exciting, and much more, which means that engineering is a wonderful area to get involved in.
