Alopecia
Hair loss or baldness (technically known as alopecia) is a loss of hair from the head or body. Baldness can refer to general hair loss or androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness). The number of strands normally lost in a day varies, but on average are 100.
Types of Alopecia: 1. Alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder. 2. The extreme forms of alopecia areata are alopecia totalis, which involves the loss of all head hair, and 3. Alopecia universalis, which involves the loss of all hair from the head and the body. 4. Alopecia androgenetica, or alopecia seborrheic.
Causative Factors: 1. Infections: » Dissecting cellulitis » Fungal infections (such as tinea capitis) » Tinea capitis » Folliculitis » Secondary syphilis » Chemotherapy or radiotherapy » Auto immune disorder » Traumatic damage » Deficiencies normally or post pregnancy, menarchy, anemia. » The most severe form of the condition, cystic acne arises from the same hormonal imbalances that cause hair loss, and is associated with dihydrotestosterones production. » Seborrheic dermatitis, a condition in which an excessive amount of sebum is produced and builds up on the scalp (looking like an adult cradle cap) is also a symptom of hormonal imbalances, as is an excessively oily or dry scalp. Both can cause hair thinning. » Psychological factors play an important role. » Air and water pollutants. » Hypo and hyperthyroidism. » An unhealthy scalp environment. » Chronic inflammation(folliculitis) or a chronic disease (anemia, kidney failure, diabetes etc.) Symptoms of Alopecia: » Hair loss in patches usually in circular patterns, » Dandruff, skin lesions, and scarring. » Alopecia areata (mild - medium level) usually shows in unusual hair loss areas e.g. eyebrows, backside of the head or above the ears where usually the male pattern baldness does not affect. » In male-pattern hair loss, loss and thinning begin at the temples and the crown and either thins out or falls out. Female-pattern hair loss occurs at the frontal and parietal. According to Ayurveda, the hair is derived either as a by-product or produced as a breakdown product of Asthi (bone tissue). Hair loss is caused because of pitta dosha. Pitta governs our metabolism and digestion. A balanced pitta leads to a healthy body and mind. Treatment and Prevention: 1. Taking care of the causative factors 2. Techniques that improve the blood circulation like pranayama 3. Blood purifiers 4. Oral medication and external application of medicated oils. 5. Diet to replenish the defficiencies. 6. Taila dhara , rasayana and shodana chikitsa.
