Basics of Moving Estimates

by Leo Nov

If a move is in your near future, the first thing you should consider researching is which company to move with. Any reputable moving company will provide some type of estimate for your move.

Binding and non-binding estimates are the two basic types you will receive from a company. Many moving companies will give you a non-binding estimate free of charge, but will most likely charge you for a binding estimate. A binding estimate is a contract from moving companies that your cost will not exceed the estimate as long as you stick to the services mentioned in the estimate. If, however, you have extra items that were not accounted for in the estimate, expect to pay extra. Other special services might include extra charges for stair carries or elevators as the companies expect to be paid for any unusual service.

Many times, non-binding contracts have little to do with the price you pay for a move and are just set up so that the moving company can give you a general notion of what you can expect to pay. The actual charges are based on the exact weight of your total items as well as any other charges like stairs.

A moving company does not have to go by their non-binding estimate in the end, however, they cannot make you pay more than ten percent over the estimated cost on the day of the move. The company must bill you for the rest and give you at least one month to fulfill your payment to them.

If you don’t want to pack your own items, you can request that the movers pack them for you at an additional cost. Additional costs can include the cost of the materials and tools that the laborers will use to pack and carry your items, such as bubble wrap, cardboard cartons, tape, and padding blankets.

An additional cost that moving companies often include in their estimates is insurance. If you would like a specific type or amount of insurance, be sure to read the estimate carefully to make sure you have adequate coverage. A moving company may give you a thorough and accurate estimate, or they may give you a ballpark estimates. Make sure you know which kind of estimate you are getting.
