History
Quebec Nordiques was born in 1972 as part of the World Hockey Association. In 1979, the team joined the NHL. In the 90s, the team went through financial troubles. Finally, in 1995, the COMSAT Entertainment Group bought the team. It then acquired the present name- Colorado Avalanche. In their very first season in Denver, they won the Stanley Cup. The year was 1995-1996. That was a great season for the Avalanche.
In their first season in the NHL, the team did not make it to the playoffs. However, with the likes of Michael Goulet, Dale Hunter, Jacques Richard, Anton, and Peter Stastny, the team was slowly but surely coming into shape. During the 80s, their main rivalry was with the Montreal Canadiens. Whenever the two teams met, Colorado Avalanche tickets were always a sold out. Everybody wanted to watch the “Battles of Quebec” live. Canadiens and Nordiques would meet in five playoffs. Nordiques won three of those.
Even during the hard times, the Nordiques had some of the best players. Joe Sakic, Mats Sundin, Valery Kamensky, Adam Foote, and Owen Nolan were some of the great players for the team. Ray Bourque joined the Avalanche and contributed to the Stanley Cup win in 1991.
Looking Ahead
The Colorado Avalanche did not shine in the 2006-2007 season. However, General Manager Francois Giguere has already put that behind him and is busy rebuilding the team. He, along with Head Coach Joel Quenneville, has added some new players to the team. Ryan Smyth and Scott Hannan have improved the chances of the team for the playoffs.
