Travelling Isn't Free, But It Can Be Cheap
It is certainly no secret that the economy has been through a very tough run in the last four years. In this period companies and families alike have had to review their finances and evaluate the areas in which spending can be cut. For many companies and families this has meant a reduction in business trips and vacations, as they can often be expensive and seen by many as a luxury item. Here are three specific cost areas that can be reduced, allowing you to attend that business trip and continue to plan that family vacation.
1. Travel Arrangements Flights and accommodation are usually the highest single expenses of any trip or vacation, making them a good area to target in order to reduce spending. The only solid advice available when booking flights is to book as far in advance as possible and always shop around. Flight comparison websites will find the best deal available so always research these before booking your flight.
When it comes to accommodation, many travelers are setting out on the wrong foot if they want to save money. I have found that searching for furnished apartments, also referred to as corporate apartments, as oppose to hotels, returns much more cost-efficient accommodation for any trip. Furnished apartments are no less luxurious than a hotel and regularly come complete with concierge and house-keeping services, free parking and access to fitness centers and swimming pools. Furnished apartments are a certain way to save money on any business trip or vacation, even more so when travelling as a family or in a group, and so if you take only one piece advice away from this article make sure it is this; furnished apartments can reduce your accommodation cost without reducing luxury.
2. Eating Out Eating out for every meal while you are away works out very expensive, but this seams unavoidable to many people, I am here to tell you it isn't. Don't break your routines from home just because you are away. If you usually have cereal in the morning and prepare your own lunch then continue to do so, this will be much easier when staying in a furnished apartment as you will have the use of a full sized refrigerator and a cooker. If you are on a business trip then you may be having evening meals with clients and this is unavoidable, however when on family vacations consider cooking your own meals a few nights, this will save money and will likely provide lunch for the next day.
3. Activities The activities on a business trip are usually already set, be it meetings or a conference, vacations are very different however. A simple internet search for "free events/things to do in (your destination)" can fill your itinerary with free events and places to visit. This is a great way to save money and many places offer free concerts, open air movie showings and parades amongst other things all year round.
So don't miss that conference or cancel a vacation this year just because money is tight, just be sensible with your planning and try to create a budget that is achievable and stick to it. Bon voyage!
