There is an epidemic that is plaguing the Unites States right now. More than fifty percent of adults are overweight, and a significant portion of those are obese. Just being fat is bad enough, but it also comes with all kinds of other health problems, like hypertension and cardiovascular disease. It would seem with all the fad diets out there, losing weight would be easy. But getting into shape isn't something you do overnight. It takes a significant lifestyle change, and you must stick to it. Getting in shape isn't something that you do in your spare time. It's something you must be dedicated to. In this article, you'll learn some tips on how to get there.

It's impossible to get anywhere if you don't know where you are going. Getting in shape is the same way. If you only have a vague idea that you'd like to "get in shape," then you will likely fail. What you need are some specific goals. That way, you'll be able to measure your progress, and take concrete steps to move you forward along the path. Not only do you need a solid goal, but you need to know what the benefits will be when you reach your goals. The benefits have to be strong enough to pull you through any times of low motivation.

You'll need to do some kind of exercise. Choose an exercise that you'll be willing to do several times a week. Something like walking is perfect, because you can do it first thing in the morning when you wake up. Also, it's a good idea to have some kind of sporting activity to do on the weekend, such as tennis. Playing tennis with your friends is a great workout, and it also motivates you to get into better shape.

How you eat is the other side of the important two sided coin. As much as you can, you've got to stick to healthy foods. Lean protein, healthy fats, and complex, slow digesting carbohydrates. Of course, don't expect to eat like this one hundred percent of the time. Give yourself a cheating day, where you can eat ice cream and pizza.

Getting support is important. Tell your family or close friends what your goals are, and get their support when you feel low. Also, joining an online community can be of some benefit as well.

When you start slowly, and keep doing healthier and healthier things, it becomes easy to get into shape. Just realize it's going to take a while, and you are going to need to alter your lifestyle. Just don't give up until you get there.
