Art Reproductions Are Worth Their Place In A Home

by Matt Pham

In a family there may be a family resemblance between children but they are usually very different in appearance and character. This is despite the fact that their parents have gone about reproducing them in very much the same way each time. It is the same with art reproductions. Each one is unique.

An artist who sets out to reproduce a famous masterpiece has some things to his advantage. He does not have to go through the pain of conceiving an idea from scratch. His subject will not move and nor will details shift. The basic composition will have been done and his challenge will be to emulate a master. That is easier said than done.

Since the advent of photography artists have been able to use images of people or landscapes as the raw material of art. Some may prefer to take an easel and walk into the fields to spend the day paintings. Others hike along a beach with a camera snapping images which they may later paint.

Whether parents produce beautiful children or artists produce images from photographs or artists reproduce masterpieces there is one issue that is significant and that is individuality. Like a photograph, a masterpiece remains static but the artists who try to reproduce it are not machines or cameras. They are living people who will leave a subtle imprint upon the reproduction. Ironically, efforts to be truly faithful to the original are what give reproductions their individuality. Some will be better than others. Flaws in technique are distinctive as are perfections.

That is the raisin retread behind online sites that advertise art reproductions as opposed to prints or photographs. There are degrees of art behind each reproduction. Though the aim of an artist might be to faithfully reproduce what he sees before him his individual technique might put the unmistakable stamp of individuality on his work. In some respects he may prove less that the master but in other respects he may actually be superior.

After all, there is a fallible human being behind every original masterpiece. Flaws are a significant part of the difference between manufacture and art. They might kindly be called idiosyncrasies if they are distinguishing features of an artist's work. The work of Picasso can be photographed or machine copied but its incredible value lies largely in its originality of conception and execution.

A Van Gogh reproductions could be indistinguishable from the original. The discrepancy in price could be due almost totally to the reputation and rarity value of the original. For someone who loves art and can appreciate the aesthetic qualities of a work, a reproduction could serve all the purposes of art save the investment issue.

In the art world there are those who buy paintings for their investment value and those who so appreciate aesthetic qualities of works that they long to live with them. For such people who may never be able to afford an original the option of an art reproduction is viable. It is not a photograph or print, but has all the hallmarks of two creative and original minds imprinted on it.
