Just Imagine
I have written an article which explored what out life wold be like should the Internet not exist. I would now like to go in the other direction, imagining the differences it would have made had the Web, and related technology, been around years before it was actually born. As an example I am going to use a television program many of you recognize. Although it was discontinued may year ago, it is still shown on networks specializing in retro-programming. Yes I am showing my age, along with the fact I watch far too much television, But, here goes. At one time, the television program "Ironside", with Raymond Burr was very popular. The program aired, I believe, in the late sixties maybe the early seventies. Our lead character, Police Chief Ironside, was wheelchair bound due to an attempted assassination. He and his crew of detectives Mark, Ed and Eve, worked to solve various crimes throughout San Francisco.
I wold first like to address the hideous van used by the "Chief". He went through a couple different versions, each having the ability to provide access by wheelchair. Sure, the second model was much better, but both were lacking to say the least. Had the Internet existed, he could have gone online, went to a site specializing in such vehicles, added many additional features and driven in a van which was much better fitted for his needs. The Chief spent much time waiting for "Telexes" from various Law Enforcement agencies giving him information concerning suspects. Just consider how much easier it would have made his life had he been able to use emails. Photos could have been attached, saving him time and the city money. In fact, look at the difference it would have made should he have been able to "IM", or make use of his webcam.
In the later segments, the Chief managed to have a very large and awkward "car phone" installed into his van. He was then able to reach a mobile operator and place calls from the field. The members of his team, however, were required to fend for themselves by using the payphones found acattered throughout the city. I can only imagine how much easier things would have been with cells at their disposal. Even better, should they have owned Smart phones, with the apps of course, crime solving in San Francisco would have been years ahead of it's time. Another matter I would like to address concerns his female detective Eve, or Fran depending upon the season you are watching. Both were, of course great detectives. However, both had one additional talent which must be mentioned. They were extremely adept at running after a criminal while wearing spike high heeled shoes. Just consider for a moment how much easier it would have been if they had went online and ordered some sensible running shoes. Oh well, I guess that really should be another article all together.
