Black Hat SEO VS. White Hat SEO-The battle for the soul of SEO.There has always been a battle in the SEO world similiar to a star wars or lord of the rings type battle of good vs evil. The black Hat style of search engine optimization consists of techniques used to get higher search rankings that are illegal, unethical, spammy, and generally in poor taste. The white hat SEO style consists of more honest methods to obtain high search rankings. Paul Cooper an SEO consultant explains, "The black hat seo has ruled the search rankings since 1999, however the pendulum has definetly swung towards the white hat seo in the past year. Clients are definitely thinking long term, and the long term always say's don't risk your reputation for a short term gain. Recent data shows that SEO spending has quadupled in the past two years, as more companies are allocating more funds to ecommerce. Says blackburn consulting seo Todd Mclain, "almost 90 of our clients tell us they only want the safest measures, they know the gig is up on black hat methods. So how do you figure out if you are dealing with a white hat or a black hat. The first step is to ask, many black hat seo's will openly brag about their unethical methods. While a white hat seo will want it to be known that they use only ethical methods. Ask them directly, how they will obtain links? What specific keyword methods will they use? A good conversation with your SEO will usually give you the answer. One white hat SEO named Brian Heonue started the wildly popular service linkclimb.net, a link service exclusively for white hat SEO's. He comments, "link exchange is the number one ingredient to successful SEO. The only problem was you had two choices, go to a link farm or individually contact websites. One option is very slow and tedious and the other is a losing proposition in the long term. I started trading links with other SEO professionals on an open forum. It was great until the black hat seo's moved in and began submitting hundreds of junk. We eventually came up with a solution, we created a secure and closed off site exclusively for white hat seo's. Our Members exchange every link manually from seo to seo the way the search engines intended it to be. Additionally posting domain names is strictly prohibited on the site. This allows links to be exchanged anonomously, something every CEO appreciates. Once we had a closed off, membership style site, our network of honest professionals weeded out the black hat seo's". Mr. Heonue explains, "A black hat wants to exchange thousand of links just so they can charge their client on a per link basis. The client eventually gets penalized when the inbound links are identified as being part of a link farm. We have solved this problem by mandating anonymous, and one to one reciprocal trades."The future of SEO is still an uncertain one. Will clients continue to outsource there seo work, or will every company have an in house SEO on duty? Jake Riley an seo consultants comments, "the most likely scenario is that web design firms will begin to dominate the seo field. Launch seo services are becoming a staple in design houses across the country. Designers already have the two most important facets, the client and access to the site. They have the inside track, why not offer full SEO?"One thing is for certain, you can't outsmart the best minds in the country for long. Take a cue from google, and don't be evil, that way they won't have to punish you.
