Gallbladder Disease - A Dangerous Side Effect of a 4th Generation Birth Control Pill
Many women are suffering from gallbladder problems that were caused by one of the first fourth generation birth control pills to come on the market. This particular oral contraceptive is a combination hormone contraceptive. It contains a synthetic form of progestin called drospirenone and another hormone, estrogen, called ethinyl estradiol.
This pill was marketed heavily in the U S with ads that promoted its use for treating PMS (premenstrual syndrome) and PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder).
Women, who are twice as likely to develop gallstones as men, can become even more prone to gallstones after ingesting these oral contraceptives. That's because the hormones in these pills can decrease their gallbladder movement while simultaneously increasing the cholesterol level in their bile.
Serious Problems Can Arise
When this happens gallstones can be created. Serious problems can then result if these gallstones get trapped in their bile ducts.
Laproscopic gallbladder surgery may be called for. Then, following the surgery, they may be subject to additional side effects caused by the surgery itself.
Gallbladder disease is not the only potential problem associated with this medication. Women who have taken this pill have also developed blood clots, pulmonary embolism, pancreatitis, deep vein thrombosis, strokes, and even sudden cardiac arrests.
The bottom line is some women who were trying to prevent pregnancy or who were taking this oral contraceptive for other reasons have already died from the pill. And countless others are still suffering from the diseases it has caused.
What Should You Do If You Are Taking a Fourth Generation Birth Control Pill
If you are taking an oral contraceptive that contains either drospirenone and/or ethinyl estradiol then you should call your medical practitioner and schedule an appointment so that you can discuss safer alternatives. If you have taken these contraceptives and are not feeling well you should also see your doctor.
Hopefully you can change medications before these cause you any significant harm. However, if you have experienced serious negative side effects (or if your significant other has passed away because of these pills), then you may want to consult an attorney who specializes in birth control litigation.
Although a significant number of women throughout the US have suffered from these life threatening oral contraceptives, many of them are not aware of that they have significant legal rights that were designed to protect them from negligence and potentially reward them with financial settlements because of their suffering.
And most of the attorneys who represent personal injury cases such as these offer a free initial consultation and, if they feel a lawsuit is warranted, will work on a contingency basis. In other words, they will not charge anything unless they win the case. And then fee is taken out of the settlement.
