Conveyor Belt - What Are Some Of The Options Available?

by Jurgen Mennel

A conveyor belt is an endless loop of a material stretched over two or more pulleys and mostly used to transport or move objects from one location to another. A typical belt is guided by rollers and driven by motors at different stages, and can be several kilometers long. It is one of the major means for conveying heavy and light materials through short or long distances in factories and other places. Before they were introduced, factory workers were needed to move items manually, creating a lot of stress and inefficient use of labor. Today, there are various types of belts that are suitable for different uses.

Curved Belts

Conveyor belts can be classified as straight or curved. Generally, curved belts present a lot of advantages over straight ones. For instance, they can run smoothly though curves while retaining their track holding. Most curved belts have a curve shape of 180, 90 or 45 degrees and are usually constructed in flexible mode. As a result, they are suitable for agricultural and industrial purposes as well as heavy industries to carry large articles and machineries. Depending on the application, they can be adjusted, and the materials are also chosen based on the application. Curved belts are often custom-designed and come in different styles and widths.

Automated Belts

When conveyors are used over long distances of up to several kilometers, this may pose a lot of problems when breakdowns such as belt tearing occur. The material may also get stuck on the belt. In such a situation, the interruption could cause tremendous damage to the materials and even to the business. Automated belts are useful for minimizing such interruptions and are therefore suitable for bulk material handling, which requires smooth operation for maximum productivity.

Fabric Belts

Cotton-woven belts are made from closely woven cotton fiber in warp and weft and are mainly used to convey light materials. Surprisingly, these belts are extremely tough and very flexible, although they have lower elongation than other textile belts. They are ideal for short distance conveyance and can also be used for mechanical fastening. A polyester cotton conveyor belt is an upgrade from cotton woven belts and is thinner, lighter and shock resistant. Polyester cotton belts function better and are widely used to transport medium weight materials for medium and short distances.

Choosing A Belt

It is important to select the right type of conveyor belt or system, and this will depend on your product, its shape and weight, the product conveyance orientation you want the speed you need. These are fundamental aspects that will determine what conveyor you will need and if a belt is appropriate. You may also want to consult with a reputable conveyor manufacturer to receive proper advice on what would work best for you. Avoid making rash decisions, since conveyors are expensive and choosing the wrong one may mean having to buy a new one. Do your best to get in touch with a reputable manufacturer offering suitable solutions at an affordable rate.
