Missing the Passion in Your Work? Create it!

by Ann Tardy

76% of all Americans are not happy in their jobs, stating that their work lacks passion, "meaning" and "purpose.”

Unfortunately, most people believe that the only way to be passionate about their work or their employer, is to find a new job or change careers altogether. But if you keep chasing “passion,” you’ll never find it. You need to work on creating passion and then you’ll know if you want to change jobs, careers, or just your attitude.

Two of the 9 essential moxie strategies (moxie: spirit, courage, determination, guts) will help you create that passion and in the process re-engage in your work.

Act As If. If you walk into your job and act as if you don’t want to be there, you won’t want to be there. Start acting as if you are interested in your work, and you will become interested. Get interested in the people you work with, the company, its goals, its strategy, the market place, your industry, your expertise, your profession.

Be Uncomfortable. You will never lose weight, lower your cholesterol, and tighten those abs by sitting on the couch watching TV eating ice cream. But it sure is comfortable! We similarly risk getting too comfortable in our jobs - daily routines, weekly meetings, to-do lists, regular paychecks. No wonder we crave the office drama – it spices things up for us. If we want greatness at work, we need to get out of our comfort zone.

Using Them Together. These two strategies are powerful when you use them together. Force yourself to act as if and be uncomfortable at the same time. Create opportunities in your job that will make your days more exciting while helping you unleash your passions. Here are some ideas: • Ask questions in meetings that force people to think not just nod their heads • Make a presentation to clients on a new product/service • Research a new business line and present it to the executives • Identify and solve a problem for the company • Organize a department outing • Present ideas to the company to make more money or save on expenses • Hold a workshop in your company to teach others your expertise • Start a Toastmasters club at your company • Volunteer to lead a community project for your company • Celebrate your assistant’s birthday with decorations, cake and singing

As long as you keep working, create your own passion and moxie, and start having fun!
