Leadership Vs Management: What is The Difference?

by Pat Lindle

Not all of the best leaders are good mangers and vice versa. The reality is that in a corporate environment the leader needs to possess both attributes. If not they should employ someone as a right hand that does have both to make up for their shortcomings. There is a very old proverb that states "leadership is doing the right thing and management is doing things right. Read on to discover the subtle differences between leadership and management.

Doing the Right Thing - Leadership Leadership is all about change through motivation and example. A good leader can make people dismiss their differences and work whole heatedly toward a common goal. Leadership demands that you be on a journey, whether it is moving to the next level in sales or improving peak performance. There are a lot of good managers that lack that leadership quality to motivate the staff to greater heights. Fortunately, leadership can be learned just as well as management. Leadership is a skill and some are born leaders while others have to work at it. To be a good leader you have to cultivate the skills that others find inspiring. A good leader is one that is not above rolling up his sleeves and helping, and sometimes they have to enforce but always in a manner that garners deep respect.

Leadership employs the following attributes: 1. It is a quality 2. It has vision 3. It has to do with faith 4. It always seeks to be effective or to do the right thing 5. It provides direction in the face of all odds 6. Embraces opportunity 7. It encourages and enables its people 8. It has heart

Doing Things Right - Management: You may think it is only a matter of semantics but these concept of doing what is right, as opposed to doing things right, are two totally different concepts. For instance in the military you could be ordered to kill an entire village of women and children. Doing things right, you would comply. But doing the right thing would cost you a sacrifice. By refusing to follow this order you will have done the right thing at a personal cost. You could be court-marshalled for it. Being a leader is not always easy. But neither is being a good manager. Because a manger is forced to comply with rules he/she may not agree with, does not mean they do not make a sacrifice. It is often best to have two individuals, one that can do what needs to be done and one that can do what has to be done.

Management Employs the Following Attributes: 1. It is steeped in science and is an art 2. It looks at situations with realism and fact 3. It is more concerned with efficiency as opposed to effectiveness 4. Is controlling 5. Results are all that matter 6. Rules its people

In society at large, as well as corporate structure, there is a need for both of these. When you get great leadership combined with excellent management, the sky is the limit to what you can achieve.
