Rechargeable Batteries Have Nothing On A 9 Volt
We live in a world that is just over run with gadgets at this point. When was the last time you went anywhere that there was not at least one person texting, surfing the web, playing a video game, listening to music, or anything else you need a hand-held gadget for. For most of these items there are built in, rechargeable batteries these days. These devices might be the zenith of new technology in some ways but those rechargeable batteries over time become less and less effective, and burn out quicker and quicker. Before you know it your cellphone's battery can barely sustain a charge at all, your iPod is giving you a dead battery sign after just moments of play, and your portable video game player is pretty much a paper weight.
For this reason there is a wide array of "gadgets" and "gizmos" that continue to use the same old batteries that used to fill all of our funnest and loudest toys. The reasons are clear, swapping a battery out is cheaper and safer than swapping a whole device. In hospitals across the country certain devices used to sustain lives continue to run on 9 volt and D batteries. Everything from devices to quickly test blood sugar to defibrillators rely on batteries to give them the juice they need to help sustain life. It would appear when things are really important the world still prefers to be able to swap in a new battery.
In your home too there are shining examples of this. The carbon monoxide detector and smoke alarm are run quite proficiently on their 9 volt batteries. When they begin to lose power the result is a sadly blinking light that pleads with you for a few days to get a new battery. With it's last gaps it will simply set off the alarm. It makes keeping bulk boxes of 9 volt batteries around the house a necessity. Realy if you value your life or the safety of your loved ones you probably did not need the alarms themselves to remind you of that. So while the world might want to tell you that a rechargeable battery is safer and cheaper we know that when it really counts the short shelf life of rechargeable batteries in devices simply will not cut it. Batteries are more important than almost any of us probably realize on a day to day basis. They keep things running and offer ample opportunity to replace batteries in the interim. Perhaps we should all once again stock up on all the AAA batteries and D batteries we can get our hands on. At some point people are going to realize they have been had.
