How To Make A Body Scrub

by Helen Duprey

Store purchased body scrubs can be expensive and aren't always that great. If you are paying $10 or more per container then you might as well start flushing money down the toilet. Body scrubs are a great for exfoliating your skin and leaving your body feeling renewed.

By using ingredients you may already have in your kitchen pantry you can make a body scrub for pennies to what you normally pay. Body scrubs come in a few types, the difference is in the base of the scrub, there a salt, sugar, nut, sea shell, pumice and more.

Each exfoliate has a different affect on your skin:

Salt - Most body scrubs are made with sea salt or kosher salt, salt is a great exfoliate however if you have sensitive skin you might want to try the less abrasive sugar scrubs.

Sugar - Many body scrubs are made with either brown, white, or natural sugars. Sugar scrubs are great because they are less harsh on your skin and dissolve easily in warm water thus making less of a mess in your shower or bath.

Pumice - There are several brands that use pumice in their body scrubs, while pumice makes a great exfoliate it is also very harsh on the skin.

Sea shells - This is a new one I've seen popping up and is very similar to pumice type body scrubs.

The best exfoliates to use if you are deciding to make a body scrub are either salt or sugar, with sugar being more recommended. Once you have picked your type of scrub, you can decide what type of oils you want to add. These can be almond, olive, or jojoba oil, these all have great moisturizing effects on your skin and vary only in scent and price. Now that you've chosen your oil, it's time to pick your scent! You can choose any scent you like just be sure that the essential oil you choose is safe to use on skin.

Many people add extra ingredients to the scrubs but these are all optional. If you're just starting out try out a few basic recipes to get the hang of how to make a body scrub. Once you've become a master of making scrubs you can begin to experiment even further. Body scrubs are fun and easy to make, great gift ideas, and above all beneficial to your skin and body.
