Defining the top undergraduate business schools is a very arbitrary task, with many different companies and surveys using their own unique factors. For the student who is looking for the perfect business school to attend, the search can be very personalized - I know for a fact that when I was looking for my own college, I looked at different elements that my friend was not looking at. Students want to attend a school that meets their needs; they do not want to attend a school that they have to settle for. Therefore, the elements of the top undergraduate business schools may vary from student-to-student, but many of them share similar facets.

It's no surprise today's global economy needs professionals who are savvy with the international markets and have traveled to other countries to experience first-hand other markets. For some of the top undergraduate business schools, studying abroad has become a requirement. From my own experience, traveling to other countries opened my eyes in ways that a textbook couldn't. For these business majors, I am sure the same would happen both professionally as well as personally. The theories and practices long talked about in the classroom can be seen first-hand in a real setting as they meet with real business people.

Another theme of the top undergraduate business schools that are markedly different from those even 50 years ago is a more entrepreneurial take on business. Many more schools are creating classes to accommodate the influx of young people who have a desire to head a start-up company. Other classes are dedicated solely to the internet side of business and how business can make their own mark there. Social networking is just one example of the changing face of business.

Of course, we all want experienced, knowledgeable professors no matter the major or school that we choose. For example, if you are taking a Russian History class, it stands to reason that the professor has a background in Russian History, but also experience with the language and culture first-hand. With a business class of any type, you want the same thing - a professor who has extensive business knowledge learned first-hand. This has become only more relevant in today's entrepreneurial marketplace, where start-ups have begun to dominate certain market sectors, such as software and technology, and people can make a nice living catering to niche sectors of the same business, such as phone apps.

Lastly, something that perhaps not all college-hopefuls always look at when first looking at college is the starting salaries of students who have graduated from their chosen major. Well, for many ranking services, the top undergraduate business schools that usually make the list are those who have a high percentage of students who make a good amount of money after graduating. As competition for jobs become fiercer and more students than ever are pursuing a college degree, the choice of major has become more important as well.

For many students, going back to school full-time for a M.B.A. might not be possible due to other commitments like family or household bills, so they may opt to pursue an online M.B.A, or similar degree, instead. This alleviates the stress of commuting. It also allows more people to continue to work while gaining a valuable education.
