How Long To Wait Before Selling On Your Blog?

by Jeff Schuman

One question that I know is on the mind of many new bloggers is how long should you wait to start selling on your blog? I am going to assume that your blogging of least so you can make money online. With that in mind let me offer a couple of pieces of advice based on past experience.

1. Content First-Selling Second. Depending on the size you plan to make your blog you should at least get some content on it before you start to sell.

If it's going to be a smaller site in a micro niche you want to add 5 to 10 pages of content, and get those optimized, before you start selling a product. If you are planning on blogging consistently in the future there is nothing wrong with adding something like an affiliate program banner, or even a link to an affiliate program in your initial blog posts.

2. What to sell? Affiliate products are a good way to make money on a blog.

Of course you see plenty of Google Adsense ads on blogs. You can also find affiliate products to sell in program such as as Clickbank or Amazon.

Another thing to do is create your own products and sell them. If you have a specific niche you're that does not have a lot of affiliate products available creating your own makes sense too.

Plus when you create your own products you get to keep more of the profits. You can also start your own affiliate program, or add your products to affiliate program, and make even more money by letting affiliates sell for you.

3. List building. To me as this is the most important thing you can do on your blog.

Build an email list and follow up with it on a regular basis. This really is the best way to sell on a long term basis.

Once you have a subscriber's name and email address you can follow up with them whenever you want to. You can sell right in the body of the email, or you can refer people back to your blog. Your list can be an excellent source of blog traffic.

There is no need to get in a rush selling on your blog. Hopefully you are starting a blog with the idea that they're going to be around for a long time.

Just because you do not make money in the first week or two, doesn't mean that you won't make it in the upcoming weeks and several years thereafter.
