Three Places Never To Take A First Date

by Julia Austin

There is something to be said for doing something unconventional on a first date to get a conversation started. And then there is something to be said about making your date very uncomfortable, like I was made on these weird first dates:

Turtle Racing:

Turtle racing has become the new trendy activity for many bars in big cities to offer their patrons. What more innovative of a way is there to let the competitive side that arises in every drunk person be put to use than to have them..um...race turtles? I was taken to actually a quite quaint bar with great drinks where everything seemed as it should be besides what looked like a big play pen in the middle, loaded with tiny turtles. I have a few criticisms of this date.

1) That adrenaline gets pumping in men when drunk, and if something is there for them to take it out on , they will. I barely got to know my date because he was too busy directing me on how to get our little green creature a head start

2) These places are degrading to women. The males allow--but secretly really want--the women to be the ones who put the turtle on the ground, meaning they have to bend over. Thanks date!

Karaoke:

This is so much fun to do with friends who you're comfortable around but, I don't go on a date with the intentions of improving my vocal techniques. Because, like with anything, in order to get better at it you need to accept a few flops. I cringe at the thought of my voice cracking in front of a guy I'm trying to impress! I'll either have to learn how to sing better before our next date, or avoid more dates with this guy all together. What flattering activity will he come up with next? Kung Fu fighting?

Parent's party:

I get it. A lot of guys are super bonded with their family and they consider them more like buddies than blood;they get drunk together, laugh their butts off, and swap stories about who they've hooked up with;If there is a family gathering that you just can't miss out on, then don't! But dragging me along on our first date is not the best idea. One guy did this. The only warning I got was "we are going to a party" and suddenly, I had to meet the parents, the best friends, and even long-lost ex girlfriends on date #1. For my date, this was a zero-stress environment. Being in my position, it was total chaos mode. Not fair odds for a first date. Oh, and guess what? There was more singing at this party! Yup. They had a karaoke machine.
