Leap of Faith

I have a frame on my bedroom dresser with a postcard in it with this saying:

"Sometime you just have to take the leap and build your wings on the way down."

I thought I had a good understanding of what it meant, but until very recently, it was just a saying to keep me motivated and dreaming about what I wanted to do "someday."

Here's what I know now…until you actually leap, you cannot know the freedom of having wings. You cannot know how it feels to soar and you cannot buy, rent, borrow or steal the right set of wings before you leap to keep you aloft. In fact, you don't get the wings UNTIL you take the leap.

I have jumped off the cliff and what scared me the most has not happened - I have not gone crashing to the ground. Instead, I feel like an eagle unfurling its wings and floating on the air currents. I was not prepared for this, but it feels amazing!

I'd heard about what I'm feeling now, but words are not enough to explain the feeling. The rush of not knowing whether it's going to work, the trust and faith that is required to release the grip my toes had on the edge, the view of the bottom and not knowing if it is 1000 feet down or a 1000 miles….it is the most exhilarating and frightening and exciting thing I've ever done.

No net, no security lines, no one promising to catch me…it's all up to me.

And the great thing about knowing it's all up to me is that I am, for the first time, in complete control of my destiny. No one can fire me from this job. No one can steal my ideas and use them to get a raise. No one can give me an undeserved bad review to save their own job. No one can ask me to work on a project or write a report that means nothing to me or goes against my instincts.

This is all of me offering all of myself to YOU.

Today I am officially launching my coaching business.

My passion and true calling in life, my God-given talents and gifts, are to help people sort through the confusion in their lives, pinpoint the problems, design solutions and then connect them with their own talents, gifts, desires, needs and dreams.

I thought I was having a hard time identifying my life purpose. The truth is, I always knew what it was but I was afraid to say it out loud. I was afraid that people would tell me that, no, I did not have that gift at all, or that I had no credibility, or that I wouldn't be taken seriously. But once I acknowledged my purpose and then started putting together the pieces to make it my calling, the response was completely the opposite.

Every step of the way over the past 3 months I have been seen, acknowledged, edified and reassured that this is what I am meant to be doing. The lesson I've learned: when you stop being small and step into your purpose, the world lays out the red carpet and welcomes you to the party.
