by Sam Martin

For any homeowner, it is important to be environmentally responsible around the house. There are a lot of things that can be done and it does not take a lot of effort to be a little greener at home. One of the first things that can be done would be to be pay attention to the thermostat. Making simple changes in the way the home is heated and cooled can reduce energy bills and save money at the same time. Programmable or smart thermostats allow a family to set different temperatures for different times of the day. When nobody is at the house, the temperature can be adjusted to conserve energy. A new thermostat is easy to install and is something that can be simply done by any homeowner. A simple change that can be made would be to put in new blinds. During the hot summer months, it is best to keep the home cool. By putting in curtains that block the bright sun, a home can stay cooler. This is an easy way to cut energy costs and be environmentally responsible at the same time. An energy drain in a lot of homes would be inefficient appliances. Upgrading appliances such as the washer, dryer and dishwasher can help to reduce costs. New appliances are environmentally friendly and are more efficient than older models. When shopping for a new appliance, it is important to look at the Energy Star rating. This will tell the consumer how environmentally friendly the model is, and what type of savings can be seen by getting this particular unit. If it is time for a new appliance, be certain to look for a green model. Finally, when cleaning around the home, using green products is best. Chemical cleaners are harmful to the environment and people as well. Green cleaners will work well, be less harmful to family members and pets and will be less taxing on the environment. Depending on the type of cleaning that is done, a person may need to do some research and try out different products to see which one works the best. There are a lot of different things that can be done around the home to be more environmentally friendly. These things can be as simple as changing cleaning products and installing a new thermostat. With a few simple changes, a homeowner can be greener and save money at the same time.
