Who Exactly Invented That Amazing Christmas Light Bulbs?

by John Reid

Soon after Thomas Edison formulated the light bulb that could be invested for commercial utilization, the concept of Christmas tree lights was one of the first applications. Before the discovery, electricity candles were used as christmas lights. The risks of this were of primary concern at that time.

As time progressed, the candles had glass covers, or metal lanterns having small wicks and were hung on the trees like decorations on Christmas trees. Imagine doing that this time and age: a recipe for a burning up house.

Even with the dangers, it took many years for holiday tree bulbs to become commercially available in the market. It's said that the idea of these lights originated from Edison's assistant, Edward Johnson: he had the bulbs made specially for his house and he presented his Christmas tree lights at his home in New York City.

From these simple beginnings of the inventors, the Christmas tree lighting unit went through many changes before General Electric launched them commercially. The early days of light bulbs on Christmas trees were evening lights strung together to make lengthy strings of lights. Maybe you have seen these in some old pictures. Those large bulbs that would crack into a million bits when they hit the ground.

Christmas mini lights were introduced in the mid to late 1970's. There have been many alterations to the original christmas lights but generally they are the same. Sales have climbed as application for these lights and have developed to not just furnishing the tree, as well as used as open air Christmas lights. Icicle lights tend to be the most popular and are seen on most houses that use outdoor lighting at Christmas time. Outdoor good looking lighting has become one of the most popular types and might be somewhat of a contest among neighbors. Several people will use moving Christmas lights that can create thrilling scene and some are even animated.

A great number of the lights used now are led lights. They are long lasting and if one light goes out, all the string will still function, not like bygone days, if one light was out, you had to go through one by one to determine the bad bulb. And with some holiday light strings of 100 or more, it was not a fun task. So be sure before you buy your next set of christmas lights that it says on the box that you don't have to replace a bad bulb to make the whole string of lights perform.
