Top Three Travel Credit Cards

by Dewey Hutt

Many people who buy travel insurance have at least one travel rewards card in their purse or wallet, and with good reason. With the promise of free flights and cheap hotels and car rentals, the thought of not carrying one seems frivolous. However, not all of these credit cards work as advertised. You may think you have accumulated enough points for a free trip, only to realize it was enough for a one-way fare. While some do offer great benefits like free checked bags and discounts on hotels, it is important to distinguish which are the best for your type of travel, your frequency of trips, and the airlines you choose to fly.

Capital One Venture Rewards Visa The annual fee is waived for this travel card in the first year. The fee is $59 each year thereafter. According to Consumer Reports, the APR on purchases that you make with the Capitol One Rewards Visa card can be as low as 13.9 percent. There are also 2 points added to every dollar spent, and 10,000 bonus points added to the total after spending $1,000 in the first three months of use. Folks who travel abroad and purchase travel insurance will be happy to hear that there is also no foreign transaction fee.

Barclaycard Arrival Both Yahoo and Fox News agree, that the Barclaycard Arrival is a top winner in the field of travel credit cards. Barclay offers a generous 40,000-point sign-up bonus to new customers. However, credit card users have to spend $1,000 within the first 90 days of issuance. Cardholders also get 2.2 cents in rewards for each dollar they spend. In addition to no foreign fees, the Barclaycard Arrival waives the $89 annual fee in the first year.

American Airlines Advantage Visa Signature Like the Barclaycard Arrival, there is a generous up-front bonus of 40,000 travel miles. However, you must spend $3,000 within in the first 3 months to qualify. You can also accumulate an extra 10,000 miles if you put $10,000 on the card within the first year. If you are going on a long trip, you also save 25 percent on in-flight food and beverages, in addition to free checked bags. However, this card has a hefty $95 annual fee that is also waived within the first year, and the APR on purchases is 15.24 percent.
