How cycle counting benefits warehouse management system

The importance of the right type of warehouse inventory control software Many times employees access data on a radio frequency device, only to discover the company’s warehouse inventory control software may be showing a phantom item. The warehouse management system may list the item as being in the store, while in actual fact it may have been destroyed or sold. How do you know what inventory is actually in-store? Implementing a physical count may take too long to update your warehouse management software or warehouse management system. It may be faster to adjust your warehouse management system with a cycle count.

Why are cycle counts more accurate? For one, cycle counts are done more often, and this makes employees more familiar with how to perform the counts. This means cycle counts may accurately being used to discover warehouse management software discrepancies more quickly. How accurate are cycle counts? In 2007, the Aberdeen Group studied if warehouse capabilities helped improve performance. Forty-nine percent of the 552 businesses were more likely to practice cycle counts than physical inventories. A physical inventory count is usually once a year and may not accurately account for items listed in a computer system. This is because inventory counters can introduce new physical errors which may make a store’s inventory count even more than what the store’s warehouse management software is showing.

How cycle counting benefits warehouse management system

A periodic cycle count allows you to develop better accuracy since some must be transferred into a warehouse management system by hand. What benefits to you reap by frequently counting, three to four times a day? This may mean a product’s on-hand number is more accurate after a count. This on-hand number may need to also be changed in warehouse inventory control software programs, so that it records an accurate number.

However, one change in warehouse inventory control software doesn’t just affect one store’s General Merchandise Department; it affects errors in receiving, shipping, ordering, packaging, labeling, returns, and fulfillment orders. Customers are happy when the cycle counting is in use, because store shelves stay filled more often and you know what stock is going in the door, into stock, and out the door. This allows you best meet the needs of your business and customers. It can also lower warehouse management systems’ cost by not raising inventory-carry costs in computerized system.
