Famous Fancy Yellow Diamonds

by Mark Etinger

Diamonds can come in a wide variety of colors, from red to fancy yellow, or even fancy vivid yellow as opposed to fancy intense yellow. Diamonds get their color through miniscule amounts of impurities, the specifics of which determine shades and hues. In fact, just a single part per million change in lattice work atoms can have a brilliant effect on the coloration of these coveted creations. Nitrogen is the root cause of yellow coloring. Institutions like the Gemological Institute of America officiate the exact coloration of prominent diamonds. Let's take a look at a few of the most famous yellow ones, especially fancy yellow diamonds.

The Allnat diamond is one such example. It once sold for over three million dollars. Though its origins are unknown, it was once commissioned by its owner, a sportsman and art lover, to be set in an intricate flower-inspired base. This fancy yellow diamond was also once included in a Smithsonian display of exemplary diamonds, along with many others of different colors and shape.

The highest price fancy yellow diamonds have been sold for is the 10.9 million dollars spent on the Cora Sun-Drop, the largest yellow pear shaped diamond in the known world. It was found in a pipe in South Africa in 2010, was later housed in London, then cut by a company in New York and finally sold at auction to an anonymous bidder. It's estimated to be upwards of 3 billion years old!

The largest irradiated diamond in the world is also one of the most famous fancy yellow diamonds. Found in Pennsylvania, The Deepdene was irradiated, according to gem expert Dr. Eduard Gübelin, by a heavy dose of neutron bombardment. Interesting enough, no one believed him when he first declared this, and the diamond was sold under false pretenses, only to be better understood later due to spectral analysis.

The Florentine diamond has a disputed history, though none dispute it is yellow. Did this diamond fall in a battle during the fifteenth century and get mistaken for glass before being discovered, or did the Jesuits hang onto it after a military defeat and throughout intense negotiations? We cannot say. It's past is unknown, as is its future; the diamond has been lost, its whereabouts unknown.

These are just a few of the most famous yellow and fancy yellow diamonds, a category itself which is just one subgroup of the larger world of diamonds. Though born from impurities, these colorations make for stunning gems and histories.
