Home made gifts - Keeping Materialism Out of a Childs Holiday

by Joey Lewitin

If you are tired of the materialism of the season jading your kids, there is a way to help. Don’t let them buy into it; help them make the gifts they give themselves.

In kindergarten this is already done. Children build craft projects for their parents for the holidays. These are sometimes clay cups, or little statues, drawings, etc. As kids grow up however, they become more and more likely to hit the stores in search of gifts, rather then using their creativity.

Children, at any age, should be encouraged to make handmade gifts. Creativity is a healthy extension of the mind that everyone has a drive to participate in. Nurture this need. By encouraging your kids to make hand made gifts you help to expand their thinking. The hand made gift is a gift from their minds, and expresses them in a much more poignant way than something they buy. This shows them that what is important is not what they have but who they are. It is important to make sure you emphasize that when receiving the gift.

Working together with a child on gifts is a great craft to bond together over. Share your creativity, and help the child learn to work with others. Even older kids can collaborate on a craft or art project with their parents. As long as you respect what intrigues them, and play to their age, it can be an enjoyable experience.

The gift itself could be anything. Sculpting, painting, or writing are skills that can be used early on, and reinforced as they grow. When the child learns to write they can write you stories or poems, and maybe frame them. Framed paintings or drawings are wonderful also. What is even better is the picture your infant colors for you could evolve, over the years, to the framed painting of a teenager. The growth potential of the mind is unlimited in what it can do.
