Texas Holdem Strategy - 7 Tips on When to Leave the Game

One of the most critical aspects to winning in poker is to know when to leave the game. One hand can make the difference between walking away with a roll of cash or taking out your credit card to try and win back your money. I cannot tell you how many times I lost 4 or 5 times the amount that I bought into a room. Here are a few tips on when to throw in the towel that will hopefully save you a lot of money and frustration.

1. You are loosing and you don’t see any chance of recovering the same amount of money you lost in this session.

2. All the bad players have left and been replaced by smarter, tighter players.

3. You are tired or cannot focus on the game.

4. There is very little or no money being played at the table even though all the seats are filled.

5. You have won all the money you can at the table. I have learned I walk away with the most money when I leave with around 3 times the amount I bought in for. Any more and I begin to play to loose and call bad bets, and any less I am not satisfied. Another good time to walk away is if you have over half of the money at the table. If you stay you will be risking too much for too little, and you will often find your stack slowly depreciating.

6. You are being outplayed. This is the toughest one of all. I am one of the most competitive people you will meet. I never want to admit that I am getting outplayed, but sometimes it happens. Sometimes an opponent will have your number. Malone was a great player but Jordan would spank him every time the playoffs would roll around. If you can leave the table when you know you are getting outplayed, your pride may take a shot, but at least you have money in your pocket.

7. There is no-one calling your bets. The way you make money in poker is capitalizing on others bad judgment. If everyone at your table is playing tight and making the right decisions, find a new table where they are not. Whether you are playing online or in a casino, there is always a table with bad players at it.

I hope these tips will keep you from having to learn these things the hard way.
