Get Your Sweet Corn Before its to late!

This is the time to get your sweet corn from either your local grocery store or farmers market. I f you wait another week you may be out of luck.

July 2010 has been the second warmest on record. With a shorter season because of the hotter and drier than normal this summer weather the sweet corn will not last long. Local farmers are finishing up their sweet-corn harvest several weeks early, because of the unusual hot weather. Many growers in central Ohio try to have sweet corn into the middle of September, according to Lisa Schacht, who family owns Schacht Farm Market in Canal Winchester, Ohio. But, that's not going to happen this year.

The arid weather was exceptional hard for most farm markets this year. The cucumber, summer squash, most lettuces, melons, and tomatoes will be gone by the first week in October.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this has been the warmest January-to-July period on record. This week didn't help much with the temperatures in the 90s. We need rain. The rain will help the crops to keep going. The tomatoes grew to fast because of the extreme heat. In Ohio the consumers will be getting their tomatoes from Michigan in the coming month. The heat has ripened the tomatoes way to soon.

Ohio grows the majority of their corn for livestock feed, ethanol and processed food products. The sweet corn that most people love is grown smaller fields. Sweet corn is grown in about 15,000 acres while the rest of the corn that is used for other sources are planted in 4 million acres.

The sweet corn that will be available will be lower, but the price should not go up very much. When the crop is ready it's ready and when it's gone it's gone. You can't wait as long this year as you have in the past. Get up and go to the farmers market or your local grocery store and get your sweet corn while you can.
